1. Background Information
1.1. MD Anderson Background
The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center (MD Anderson) in Houston, Texas, celebrating eight decades of Making Cancer History™, is one of the world’s most respected institutions devoted exclusively to cancer patient care, research, education, and prevention. Created by the Texas Legislature in 1941 as a component of The University of Texas System, MD Anderson continues to rank among the nation’s top cancer hospitals in the U.S. News & World Report’s Best Hospitals survey for over 30 years.
MD Anderson was one of the first three federally designated comprehensive cancer centers by the National Cancer Act of 1971. Over 150,000 people annually seek care at MD Anderson. The team approach to cancer care, pioneered at MD Anderson, has been strengthened by consolidating specialty clinics into multi-disciplinary care centers that allow patients to receive more ambulatory care and treatment in a single location.
1.2. MD Anderson Innovation Background
The Innovation Center at MD Anderson offers a unique opportunity to implement the transformational changes needed to keep the institution relevant in this rapidly changing new world. The team bridges the worlds of business strategy, technology and design: we exist at a place where digital opportunities, human creativity, and new ways of combining the two are allowing us to create unprecedented outcomes for our patients and stakeholders.
Since its inception in 2015, the Innovation team at MD Anderson has focused on four models of innovation: working to develop strategic insights and opportunities for leaders across the organization, identifying and solving problems, accelerating ideas and initiatives that bring value, and fostering a culture of innovative thinking. The Innovation team chose these models to best help the institution envision a future state that doesn’t just bring us up to par with competitors but allows us to leapfrog ahead and lead in all areas of care delivery, experience and operations. The world’s premier cancer center should not be limited to only top-ranked research. To best support our MD Anderson community, additional resources are needed to develop new strategies and our people while executing our mission to end Cancer.
