About this file
This document is a Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) specification for a Level III Truck Mounted and Trailer Crash Attenuator, revised in June 2018. The specification describes detailed requirements for a crash protection device used in highway operations to protect personnel, equipment, and the public from errant vehicle impacts. The equipment must be new, meet all federal and state safety regulations, and be the latest improved model in current production. Only units that are included on TxDOT's Compliant Work Zone Traffic Control Devices list and have passed the National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) Report 350 crash test at Level 3 will be considered for purchase.
The specification outlines comprehensive technical requirements including mounting hardware, chassis specifications, self-contained hydraulic tilt mechanisms, lighting configurations, safety plaques, painting standards, and chevron markings. The document also includes warranty provisions requiring a minimum 12-month warranty covering 100% parts and labor, with an authorized dealer in Texas required to provide warranty repairs within 72 hours of notification. Optional equipment is detailed, including replacement cartridges, additional leveling stands, extension brackets for specific models, and various attachment options. The specification encourages environmental considerations, such as manufacturers using recycled plastics and complying with Society of Automotive Engineers standards for plastic part marking.
