About this file

This document is a Departmental Materials Specification (DMS-8220) issued by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) for Hot Applied Thermoplastic pavement marking materials. The specification governs the materials, composition, quality, sampling, and testing of thermoplastic pavement marking materials, including regular thermoplastic, profile thermoplastic, and shadow thermoplastic marking materials used with reflective glass beads. The document outlines comprehensive requirements for manufacturers seeking to qualify their products for use in Department projects, including detailed pre-qualification procedures, laboratory and field evaluation processes, material requirements, and specific technical specifications for pigments, binders, silica, glass traffic beads, and color specifications.

The specification requires manufacturers to submit detailed documentation, including pre-qualification requests, 50-lb samples of each color for testing, and comprehensive product literature. Manufacturers must meet strict technical requirements, such as specific percentages of binders, pigments, and glass traffic beads, precise color coordinate specifications for white, yellow, and black materials, and compliance with environmental and performance standards. The document includes provisions for periodic evaluation, potential disqualification, and re-qualification processes, with the Department reserving the right to conduct random sampling and testing of pre-qualified materials. Alternative bidders must provide comprehensive product literature and specification information demonstrating how their products meet or exceed the specified requirements.
