About this file

This document is a specification from the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) for wildflower seeds for the Houston District Maintenance Operations, dated July 2025. The specification details two distinct wildflower seed mixes and individual seed options, each packaged in 50-pound or 25-pound bags. Wildflower Seed Mix 1 contains eight different native Texas flower species, including Texas Bluebonnet, Indian Blanket, Plains Coreopsis, Black-Eyed Susan, Mexican Hat, Lanceleaf Coreopsis, Lemon Mint, and Pink Evening Primrose, with specific weight allocations for each species. Wildflower Seed Mix 2 features five different native Texas flower species, with a higher proportion of Texas Bluebonnet.

The specification mandates that all seeds must be native to and originate from Texas, with seed purity requirements of 80% or higher and less than 5% weed seed. Vendors must provide detailed documentation including seed origin, purity percentage, and germination percentage for each species. If certain grass or flower plant species are unavailable from producers, the specification allows for proportional increases of other species in the mix, subject to TxDOT's prior approval. The document is designed to be shared through the National Institute of Governmental Purchasing (NIGP) and cannot be sold for profit, with TxDOT disclaiming liability when the specification is used by other entities.
