About this file

The document is an attachment (Attachment G) detailing a Materials Testing Scope of Services Breakdown, likely for a construction or infrastructure project. The scope covers comprehensive materials testing and field testing services across multiple construction domains including structural steel, concrete, structural masonry, soils, fire-resistance materials, and fire-resistant penetrations and joints. The testing services are to be performed by a Construction Materials Testing (CMT) firm on a periodic or as-needed basis throughout the construction process.

The field testing services include specialized evaluations such as water penetration testing using ASTM and AAMA standards, whole building air leakage testing, and infrared thermography of wall cladding and roofing. The CMT firm will be responsible for coordinating testing, providing equipment and personnel, documenting findings in written reports, and assisting contractors in identifying and addressing any issues discovered during testing. The scope emphasizes quality assurance, compliance with specifications, and thorough documentation of construction materials and systems' performance and integrity.

MATERIALS TESTING SCOPE OF SERVICES BREAKDOWN

1. Structural Steel – Scope of Services includes visual observations of completed field welds and spot checks of weld sizes. Weld slag should be removed from all field welds prior to scheduling the weld observation. The contractor has the responsibility to schedule these services in a timely manner such that full access is available to all welds.

Scope of services includes visual observations of selected bolted connections and spot checking of tightness of randomly selected bolts with a torque wrench when the specifications include bolt torque requirements. These services will be provided a periodic basis.

2. Concrete – Scope of services includes sampling concrete, and conducting slump and concrete compressive strength tests. Nonconforming test results will be verbally reported to the contractor’s representative. The contractor has the responsibility to reject concrete that does not comply with the specifications or is unsuitable for use.

Scope of services also includes spot observations of the formwork dimensions and the reinforcing steel size, spacing, and configuration on a periodic basis prior to concrete placement. Services related to post-tensioning should include observation of tendon installation before concrete placement, monitoring of the stressing operations and measurement and reporting of tendon elongations. The design engineer is responsible evaluating tendon elongations/stressing for compliance with the plans and specifications.

The scope of services related to anchors case in concrete includes checking of bolt diameter length, shape, and embedment in concrete. The contractor has the responsibility to schedule this observation prior to placement of concrete. In those cases, where anchor bolts are drilled and epoxied into existing concrete foundations. Successful vendor should be contacted to be present prior to installation of the bolts in order to verify the bolt hole size, depth, and cleanliness as well as the application of epoxy and installation of bolts.

The scope of services also includes periodic observation of concrete placement for proper application techniques and of the maintenance of specified curing temperatures and/or techniques for constructed structures.

3. Structural Masonry – Scope of services includes visual observation of reinforcing steel placement for both vertical cells and horizontal bond beam reinforcing steel and observation of grout placement in vertical cells and horizontal bond beams. The sequence of construction may require that these services be provided on a full-time basis during masonry construction in order to have the opportunity to observe the reinforcing steel and grout placement. Scope of services also includes periodic sampling and compressive strength testing of grout, when required by the project specifications and requested by TFC. The contractor is responsible for scheduling observations as frequently as necessary to allow for observation of all vertical and bond beam reinforcing steel and grout placement.

4. Soils – Scope of services includes sampling and testing of soils, periodic observation of earthwork operations, and moisture-density testing of subgrade and compacted fills.

Scope includes verification of the use of proper materials, densities and lift thickness during placement and compaction of compacted fill on a periodic basis.

5. Sprayed Fire-Resistance Materials – CMT firm to provide visual observation of the approved spray-applied fireproofing materials on a periodic basis. Observations will include measuring the thickness of the applied materials. If requested, CMT firm may also obtain samples for density determination and perform cohesion/adhesion tests at selected locations to determine the bond strength.

6. Fire-Resistant Penetrations and Joints – CMT firm to provide visual observations of the fire stopping systems installed for fire-rated walls, floors, or ceilings on a periodic basis. Observations will be made to determine whether or not the fire stop systems have been installed in general accordance with the details provided in the construction plans or the details provided in the approved fire stop system submittals. These systems typically include details for through penetrations, membrane penetrations and construction joints that have been tested and approved by Underwriter’s Laboratories or other nationally recognized testing agencies. The contractor is responsible for scheduling these observation services for fire stope systems during installation and before these systems are covered by dry wall or other construction materials.

Field Testing Services

1. Water Penetration Testing – ASTM E-1105 – CMT firm will coordinate and perform field pressurized chamber water testing in general accordance with ASTM E 1105 of selected curtain wall system and/or punched window locations during construction.

Upon completion of the field water penetration testing, provide a field report documenting findings and any locations that water penetration was observed. Anticipate providing this report within one week of field testing completion.

Provide the field testing materials for the construction of the pressurized chambers, testing equipment, and personnel to complete the field testing. CMT firm to determine which specific power and access requirements are necessary and coordinate with General

Contractor; also coordinate with contractor the CMT firm’s testing, with installation of interior finishes so that at the time of testing, the interior finishes will not have been installed. Otherwise, the removal of interior finishes will be required for visual access around each test specimen by the General Contractor.

2. Water Penetration Testing – AAMA 501.2 – CMT firm will perform water testing of the window systems in select locations in general conformance with AAMA 501.2 (Quality Assurance and Diagnostic Water Leakage Field Check of Installed Storefronts, Curtain Walls, and Sloped Glazing Systems). CMT firm will access these areas by way of Aerial Work Platform or other access provided by the Contractor. CMT firm to communicate any water source requirements (e.g., minimum gpm flow), ongoing water management, interior access for observation at testing locations, etc., to TFC and Contractor.

CMT firm will review data obtained during testing and prepare a written report of its findings. Include a summary of findings, including specific conditions encountered, representative photographs, conclusions, and provide comments and recommendations as required.

3. Whole Building Air Leakage (Blower Door) Testing – CMT firm will coordinate with TFC and the project team to conduct blower-door leakage testing in general accordance with ASTM E 779. This scope service will quantitatively determine building air leakage rates. CMT firm will generally conduct testing with the building HVAC systems disabled. If the results of the testing services identify leakage rates above the allowable rate, CMT firm shall assist the Contractor to identify failing areas of the air barrier. It should be noted that the caulking/sealants of the building envelope need to be provided adequate time to cure before performing the blower door test. Upon conclusion of the testing, observations and data collected by CMT firm will be provided to TFC in a report summarizing the documentation of field activities and data evaluation and presentation of test results.

4. Infrared (IR) Thermography – CMT firm will perform infrared thermography of wall cladding and roofing by a Level 1 Thermographer [Therma-Infrared Testing Level 1, American Society of Non-Destructive Testing (ASNDT) SNTTC 1A].
