About this file

This document is a certification from the Supreme Court of Texas regarding attorney licensure. The file contains a letter addressed to newly licensed attorneys, providing their Texas law license and outlining the legal requirement under Texas Government Code 82.037 for new attorneys to take an official oath. The document appears to be an official communication from the Supreme Court of Texas, located in Austin, Texas, regarding professional licensing for legal practitioners.

The specific requirement detailed in the document mandates that newly licensed attorneys must take an oath supporting the constitutions of the United States and Texas. While the full text of the document is partially truncated, it appears to be a standard procedural communication for attorneys who have been newly admitted to practice law in the state of Texas, providing them with their official license and explaining their initial legal obligations upon receiving their professional credentials.

Dear Newly Licensed Attorney:

,_,0 BOX 12?-.e

ALJST,N, -[XAS7A711

Enclosed you will find your Texas law license. Texas Government Code§ 82.037 provides that each person admitted to practice law in Texas must take an oath that the person will: (I) support the constitutions of the Unite<l States and this state; (2) honestly demean oneself in the practice oflaw; (3) discharge the attorney's duties to clients to the best ofthe attorney's ability; and (4) conduct oneself with integrity and civility in dealing and communicating with the court and all parties. The statute further provides that the oath be "endorsed on the license"', subscribed by the person taking the oath, and attested by the officer administering the oath. Omitting the phrase "So help me God" will not invalidate the oath.

For your convenience, a copy of the oath is included below. When the oath is completed, detach the oath from this letter and attach the oath to the reverse side of your license - do not return the oath to the Clerk's Office. Any person authorized to administer an oath may swear you in. Texas Government Code

§602.002 provides that oaths administered in Texas may be administered by retired or active judges, a clerk of a court, a notary public, and a number of state officials. You should refer to the statute for any questions you have about who can swear you in.

You should also read the "Texas Lawyer's Creed-A Mandate for Professionalism", which the Supreme Court and the Court of Criminal Appeals adopted on November 7, 1989. A copy of the Texas Lawyer's Creed can he found on our website at http://www.supremc.courts.state.tx.us/pdfrrexasLawyersCreed.pdf.
