About this file

This document contains questions and answers regarding a lost voltage condition on a shipboard steam turbine generator (SSTG). The 1,000 kW SSTG was the only generator online, providing around 470 kW of load, when it suddenly lost voltage without any prior faults or indications. The generator had been operating normally since mid-September. No smoke or light flickering was observed when the main switchboard lost power. Generator logs showed rising kilowatts and amps just before the failure with no additional load added.

The related federal contract opportunity is a solicitation from the Department of the Navy Military Sealift Command to troubleshoot and repair the SSTG onboard the USNS MERCY (T-AH 19). The solicitation number is N4044624Q0003 and includes the combined synopsis/solicitation, statement of work, and source selection justification.

Text version

1, What was the condition of operation when this failed? Did it fail in service or simply not startup when needed?

Condition of the unit was operational no fault indication. Underway at 73 rpm all the sudden the main switchboard went dark, the load is about 470KW and the SSTG is rated at 1000KW. Before the plant went dark, SSTG is the only generator online, that's how we normally set up on the main switchboard.

2, When was the last time it operated properly? Any electrical faults on board that you know of while this was in operation?

The SSTG has been operational online since mid September, there wasn't any indication of any power failure. With the generator not having voltage, we also lost the ability to control the SSTG frequency using the remote speed control handle. It is currently running on the governor mechanical setting.

3, Any other symptoms such as smoke smell? Lights flickering during last operation?

No smoke, light flickering during main switchboard going dark, SSTG stayed on governor at rated speed. Looking back on logs I seen that KW and AMP is raising right before it failed without us adding more load to the system

Please see attached picture of the SSTG log.
