About this file

This file is an Excel template for the Energy Frontier Research Centers (EFRCs) Science Topics submission required as part of the pre-application and full application process. The template requires applicants to identify and list up to 10 science topics or Basic Research Needs (BRN) and Roundtable Report research priorities and objectives (PRD/PROs) that their proposed EFRC addresses, listed in order of relevance. Applicants must complete fields identifying the lead organization, EFRC Director/Lead PI, and the person submitting the spreadsheet with their email address. The template includes dropdown lists of eligible science topics and reports, including categories such as Microelectronics (ME), Nuclear Energy (NE), Transformative Manufacturing (TM), Quantum Computing (QC), Electrical Energy Storage (EES), Quantum Systems (QS), and Subsurface Fractures and Fluid Flow (SFFF), each with associated PRD/PRO options specific to that research area.

The template provides specific formatting instructions: applicants must not change column order, merge cells, or split cells, and must convert the completed Excel file to PDF before including it in their application submission through Grants.gov. The template includes an example showing two Microelectronics entries ranked by relevance. The underlying EFRC program, administered by the Department of Energy's Office of Science under the Basic Energy Sciences program (CFDA 81.049), supports multi-investigator, multi-disciplinary research centers addressing energy-relevant basic research topics in materials sciences, chemical sciences, geosciences, and biosciences that integrate experiments, theory, computation, and AI/ML tools. Applications undergo peer review evaluated on scientific and technical merit, appropriateness of methodology, applicant competency and resources, budget reasonableness, and other factors specified in the funding opportunity announcement.

Instructions Instructions

Applicants are required to submit a table listing "Science Topic Addressed" for the EFRC pre-application. For purposes of uniformity, this Excel template has been provided through Grants.gov and is required for use in preparing the table, before converting to PDF for inclusion in the pre-application or full application submission, as described in the Notice of Funding Opportunity.

• List in order of relevance, with the most relevant at the top of the list. No more than 10 special topics or Report PRD/PROs can be included.

• Both special topics and Report PRD/PROs can be included.

• Most applications will have fewer.

• If including a BES Report, select the Report first, and then the PRD/PRO from the dropdown list.

• Do not change the order of the columns.

• Do not merge or split cells.
