STATEMENT OF WORK

Services for Mid-Atlantic Bottlenose Dolphin Tooth Aging

Scope of Project:

The NMFS Office of Protected Resources is procuring services for assessment of growth layer groups (GLGs) in bottlenose dolphin teeth for estimation of age from dolphins that have stranded during the ongoing Unusual Mortality Event (UME) along the U.S. eastern seaboard for life history analyses.

Specific Objectives (Year One):

Use quality control and assurance methods to determine the age estimations of teeth using GLGs from marine mammals as needed by the Marine Mammal Health and Stranding Response Program (MMHSRP), including bottlenose dolphins from the Mid-Atlantic Unusual Mortality Event (UME), and to provide those methods and digital images for archival in the National database and the specimens for archival as directed by NOAA.

Deliverables:

1.To prepare, process, cut, and read GLGs of marine mammal teeth for age estimations using quality assurance and control procedures;
2.To provide age estimations for each animal using quality control measures and to supply age readings to NOAA which will be share with the submitter;
3.To provide digital images of teeth;
4.To provide a subset of slides for secondary reading by other age estimation experts and participate in an inter-laboratory comparison;
5.To provide slides and remnants of teeth for archiving as directed by NOAA;
6.To provide a report on sample preparation, processing, cutting, and reading using quality control standards.
7.Results shall be provided within 6-12 months after submission of teeth by the stranding network.

Requirements The contractor shall have experience providing age estimates of teeth from marine mammals using GLGs, specifically bottlenose dolphins, and provide quality assurance, digital documentation, and timely processing of teeth for age estimation.

Period of Performance The period of performance for this contract shall be 12 months from the time of award with one, one-year option period.

Operations The contractor shall work closely with the NMFS MMHSRP staff in all of these activities and shall collaborate with the Working Group on Marine Mammal Unusual Mortality Events, the UME investigation team, and the stranding network.
