About this file

This is a structural engineering design document approved by a Connecticut-registered professional engineer for a 120-foot by 12-foot deep manure storage tank facility located at Valley View Farm in North Stonington, Connecticut. The project involves the construction of a sealed concrete storage tank with an operational volume of 858,906 gallons, designed to meet NRCS Technical Guide IV Conservation Practice Standards and applicable Connecticut state building codes. The facility includes three 12-foot by 12-foot concrete pumpout pads with access gates, a 16-foot by 16-foot concrete pad at the base of the access ramp, a 5-foot high chain-link safety fence with warning signage around the perimeter, and a manure transfer pipeline system connecting to a reception pit. The tank structure comprises 4,000 PSI cast-in-place concrete walls reinforced with dual mats of number 5 rebar, a reinforced concrete floor slab, and associated subsurface drainage systems including perforated foundation drain pipes and processed aggregate base materials. The design was engineered by Kevin Engel, P.E. (Connecticut Certification #PEN.0039090) at Ephrata Engineering and dated November 11, 2025.

The structural design specifications require concrete work to conform to American Concrete Institute standards for environmental engineering concrete structures (ACI 350), with detailed requirements for Portland cement type 1 materials, fiberglass reinforcement, air-entraining admixtures, water-reducing admixtures, and vapor retarders. All concrete except footings must contain a water-reducing admixture with no calcium chloride additives permitted. Reinforcing steel shall conform to ASTM standards with 60,000 PSI minimum yield strength for deformed bars, and all concrete placement, curing, and finishing must meet specified tolerances and surface irregularity limits. Excavation and foundation work requires verification of soil bearing capacity at 2,000 PSF allowable load bearing pressure, with backfill compaction standards specified at 95 percent of maximum dry density. The contractor is responsible for verifying all dimensions and site conditions before construction commencement and reporting any discrepancies to the structural engineer in writing.

Earthwork

1. Requirements A. Provide a construction grade extending eight feet beyond building exterior walls or an alternative method per Section 1804.3 of the IBC. See the cross section for additional details.

B. Excavate for foundations to subgrade elevations regardless of character of materials and obstructions encountered, unless otherwise approved by the structural engineer.

C. Perform excavation work in compliance with applicable requirements of authorities having jurisdiction.

2. Materials A. Satisfactory soil: ASTM D2487 unified soil classification groups GW, GP, GM, SW, SP, and SM; free of rock or gravel larger than two inches in any dimension, debris, waste, frozen materials, vegetation, or other deleterious matter.

B. Unsatisfactory soil: ASTM D2487 unified soil classification groups GC, SC, ML, MH, CL, CH, OL, OH, and PT.

C. Backfill and fill: satisfactory soil materials.

3. Execution A. Shallow post foundations have been designed in accordance with ASAE

EP486.1 for an assumed allowable load bearing pressure of 2,000 psf on supporting soil at a depth of 1 ft into grade. Pressure may be increased 20% for each additional 1 ft of width and/or depth to a maximum of 2,000 psf.

(EP486.1 Table 1, Footnote 4). Spread and strip foundations have been designed for an assumed allowable load bearing pressure of 2,000 psf (No increases permitted). The contractor shall verify this assumption, and shall immediately notify the structural engineer in writing of any deficiency.

B.Place backfill and fill in layers not more than eight inches in loose depth at optimum moisture content. Compact each layer under footings and slabs to a dry density of at least 95 percent of maximum dry density as determined by

ASTM D1557

C. Bottom of exterior footings shall be a minimum of 42 inches below finished grade, and the top of interior footings shall be eight inches below finished floor unless a thickened slab is specified on the plan.

Cast-In-Place Concrete

1. Concrete work shall conform to the following specifications by The American Concrete Institute (ACI).
