| Goals: The goal of this project is to connect the public with the Chesapeake Bay Gateways Network (Gateways Network)—a vast and diverse partnership of more than 300 cultural, historical, natural and recreational resource sites through land- and water-based recreation, interpretation, programming, and recreational learning experiences. The objectives of this project are to 1) further enhance the skills and capacity of the Chesapeake Bay network of community groups, non-profits, and conservation organizations to effectively collaborate, implement, and sustain community-led efforts to increase public access to and stewardship of the great diversity of the Chesapeake Bay’s natural, cultural and recreational resources, and 2) support the Chesapeake Bay Gateways Network partners in development of a collaborative strategy that will inform outdoor recreation, tourism, community economic development, conservation, stewardship and public engagement for the next decade. |
| PP: This project supports the public purpose of increasing public understanding of and access to the diversity of natural, cultural, and outdoor recreational resources in the Chesapeake Bay watershed. Collaboration in the development of the new strategic plan will enhance the skills and capacity of the Chesapeake Bay network of community groups, non-profits, and conservation organizations to effectively implement, and sustain community-led efforts to increase public access to and stewardship of the great diversity of the Chesapeake Bay’s natural, cultural and recreational resources. (c) Provide assistance in identifying lessons learned regarding community conservation and sharing those lessons learned to the conservation field and the public.
| Justification: QLF has for over two decades assisted in community-based stewardship advancing innovative conservation and protected area management. QLF’s programs focus on protecting biodiversity, interpreting heritage, and protecting the integrity of resource-based livelihoods. QLF has specific experience working with gateway communities—the towns and cities associated with national parks and other public lands, sited at the nexus of tourism, community sustainability and natural and cultural resource conservation. QLF’s project experience further encompasses a broad array including habitat protection for fish and wildlife; recovery of species at risk; reversing historic declines in seabird populations; environmental education; and new community-based models for managing forests and marine environments. This breadth of experiences advancing collaborative stewardship will be instrumental in their ability to facilitate collaboration among the Gateways Network’s vast array of partners and in support of a great diversity of resources. QLF’s skills running peer learning programs and online learning platforms, and information resources for practitioners will be instrumental in support of collaborative implementation of strategic priorities. |
