1.1 BACKGROUND
The CVN and Submarine Power Systems Branch Code 445 is the Navy’s agent for the coordination and planning of all the engineering and technical support services for Hull, Mechanical, and Electrical (HM&E) Power systems aboard U.S. Navy vessels, in particular CVNs and Submarines. Furthermore, Code 445 supports NAVSEA 05Z31 as a delegated certification authority for Sealed Insulation Systems per Mil-Std-2037. Sealed Insulation System motors are utilized throughout the fleet. Code 445 maintains competencies within the branch for Division 44 as necessary to support the Technical Warrant Holder in the areas of Rotating Electrical Equipment and Insulation Systems utilized in Generators, Electric Motors, Transformers, Cables, Power Conversion and Distribution Equipment onboard all Navy hulls. To accomplish this mission, NSWCPD utilizes extensive resources to conduct its business to the best advantage of the U.S. Navy, and selected DOD vessels. These services are accomplished in whole or in phases that minimize interruption in ship operating schedules while maximizing the capacity of Type Commander and NAVSEA agencies to upgrade, repair and modernize HM&E equipment topside and below decks. The engineering and technical support services must be done in a timely, efficient, and cost effective manner which will lead to significant and real reductions in expenditures with minimal impact on ship’s routine and evolutions.
