About this file
This document is a collection of geological survey data and reports for the Fryingpan-Arkansas Project, specifically the Arkansas Valley Conduit (AVC) Boone and Crowley Reaches. The files contain detailed geologic logs from multiple drill holes and test pits along the proposed pipeline route, focusing on soil and rock classifications, physical properties, and subsurface conditions. The investigations were conducted by the Bureau of Reclamation's Provo Area Office, with drilling performed between 2021 and 2024 near Boone, Colorado.
The geological investigations involved extensive sampling and analysis of soil and rock layers, primarily documenting Quaternary Alluvium and Cretaceous Pierre Shale. Soil classifications range from lean clay (CL) to fat clay (CH), with varying percentages of sand, gravel, and fines. Laboratory tests included gradation analysis, hydrometer testing, Atterberg limits, moisture content, and density measurements. The data will be used to support geotechnical design and excavation planning for the Arkansas Valley Conduit pipeline project, with a focus on understanding subsurface conditions, soil properties, and potential construction challenges along the proposed route.

GEOLOGIC UNITS
(Fill) - Consists of variable mixtures of fines, sand, gravel. Fill was encountered during geologic mapping in the roadways in the town of Boone. Fill was encountered in DH-24-201 and DH-24-216 where it ranged from Silt (ML) to Clayey Sand with Gravel, (SC)g with a range of approximately 30 to 40% sand, 0 to 30% gravels and 30 to 70% fines.
Quaternary Slopewash (Qsw) - Heterogeneous mix of clay, silt, sand, gravel, and igneous and metamorphic cobbles. This unit typically mantles Qat and Kp, and is located on hillslopes, thickest at the base of slopes. Visual USCS classifications include Clayey Sand with Gravel and Cobbles (SC)gc, Clayey Sand (SC), Silty Sand (SM), Lean Clay with Sand (CL)s, and Sandy Lean Clay, s(CL). The reaction with HCl ranges from weak to strong. Soil contains occasional stringers of microcrystalline gypsum. Thickness encountered during this investigation ranges from 1.7 to 8.2 feet.
Quaternary Alluvial Terrace (Qat) - Pleistocene-age alluvium that consists primarily of silt, sand, clay, gravel, and igneous and metamorphic cobbles. Qat is cross bedded and locally well cemented with calcium carbonate. Qat unconformably overlies the Pierre Shale (Kp) at the top and upper slope of local hills. Qat was not encountered while drilling during investigations but was identified on surface maps.
Geologic contacts were established through Feild investigations, and interpretation of the Geologic Map of Pueblo 1X2 degree Quadrangle, South Central Colorado (Scott et al., 1978)
Cretaceous Pierre Shale (Kp) - Dark gray, very intensely weathered to fresh shale. The shale is divided into an upper weathered zone and lower unweathered zone. The upper weathered zone ranges from 2.3 to 19.7 feet thick and is moderately weathered (W4) to very intensely weathered (W8). The lower unweathered zone is fresh (W1) to slightly weathered (W3). The contact between the weathering zones ranges from distinct to gradual over several feet. The Kp shale air slakes rapidly and has a durability index of DI3. The upper weathered zone rapidly decomposes to clay when exposed to water. Kp shale is fissile, laminated to thinly bedded, and the drill core separates readily along bedding planes. The shale contains veins of gypsum, typically has no reaction with HCl, contains a trace of marine fossils, and locally concretions up to 8 inches diameter. Kp outcrops are exposed throughout the area leading up to the Regulating Tanks site. The formation dips less than 5 degrees to the north. Qat and Qsw uncomformably overlie the shale. The Kp overlies the Cretaceous Niobrara Formation Smoky Hill Shale Member (Kns), but it was not encountered during this investigation.
See geologic logs for complete descriptions of geologic materials, drilling methods, and hole completions.
Descriptive terms appearing on the geologic drawings describe the soil according to the Visual Unified Soil Classification System (USCS) and the bedrock according to Volume 1 of the Engineering Geology Field Manual (USBR, 1998).
Geologic sections do not depict all local irregularities across the exploration site. The weathering profile is inferred between drill holes.
