About this file
These are two military detail specification sheets for U.S. Military Academy (U.S.M.A.) insignia buckles. The first specification sheet, MIL-DTL-1563/12B, details the INSIGNIA, U.S.M.A., BUCKLE, WAISTPLATE. The product is manufactured from Yellow Brass 65/35 (UNS Alloy C-268) with mirror-like polished fronts and matte finish on back and edges. Two dash numbers are specified: -1 (Top) and -2 (Bottom). Dimensions for the -1 variant are 2-3/16 inches height ± 1/64 inch (REF) and 3 inches width ± 1/64 inch (REF); the -2 variant measures 2-7/32 inches height ± 1/64 inch (REF) and 1-5/8 inches width ± 1/64 inch (REF). Thickness is 0.080 inch ± 0.002 inch. The -1 shall be dapped to a radius of 3-1/2 inches ± 1/2 inch along the horizontal plane. Suggested packaging includes individual wrapping with 50 waistplates per box.
The second specification sheet, MIL-DTL-1563/13B, covers the INSIGNIA, U.S.M.A., BUCKLE, BREASTPLATE, which shares the same material and finish specifications. The breastplate dimensions are 2-5/16 inches height ± 1/64 inch (REF) and 2-7/16 inches width ± 1/64 inch (REF), with a thickness of 0.050 inch ± 0.002 inch. The breastplate shall be dapped as shown on the engineering drawings. Packaging follows the same standard commercial approach with individual wrapping and 50 breastplates per box. Both specifications note that (REF) measurements are taken from Government-furnished hubs or dies and require marking for identification on the back of each buckle. Both specifications supersede earlier versions and are approved for use by all Departments and Agencies of the Department of Defense. The custodian and preparing activity for both is Army – IH, with DLA – CT as the review activity.
