Background
The 3GEN FLIR is the next generation of Reconnaissance, Surveillance and Target Acquisition (RSTA) sights to restore sensor overmatch through significant improvements in range and resolution. The 3GEN FLIR program incorporates High Definition (HD) dual band Mid-Wave Infrared and Long-Wave Infrared (MWIR/LWIR) sensing technology advances into a common B-Kit for RSTA capabilities in day-night and degraded battlefield environments. The 3GEN FLIR B-Kit provides the ability to detect threats at greater distances under a full spectrum of conflict and battlefield conditions. 3GEN FLIR enhances the platform's effectiveness and survivability by providing greater situational awareness promoting combat effectiveness and reducing fratricide. This contract produces a common B-Kit for integration into US Army Forward Looking Infrared (FLIR) sensor systems. B-Kits manufactured under this contract will be provided as Government Furnished Equipment (GFE) to PM Abrams for integration into the Abrams M1A2 SEPv4. This contract also includes options for providing B-Kits to the Next Generation of Combat Vehicles (NGCV) Optionally Manned Fighting Vehicle (OMFV) variant.
System Description
The B-Kit comprises a collection of class IX parts that includes the Dewar Cooler Bench (DCB) (which will be provided by the Government to the B-Kit Contractor as GFE), focal, Imager, and three Circuit Card Assemblies (CCA) which are the Motor Control (MC), Power Supply (PS), and Video Processor (VP). The Afocal includes four different two-dimensional optical fields of view (FoV) which contain optical elements that are coated to pass dual band MWIR/LWIR radiation and a Thermal Reference Source (TRS) to support Non-Uniformity Correction (NUC). The Imager includes the focusing optics, focus control, filter wheel, and Fast Steering Mirror (FSM). The CCAs include electronic components and software to do the various command and control (C2) functions and image processing. The MC CCA provides the C2 functionality for the multiple mechanisms within the Afocal and Imager. The PS CCA distributes the power to other CCAs, optical mechanisms and DCB. The VP CCA includes C2 for the GFP DCB, interface to host sight/display, built-in-test (BIT) capabilities, FSM control, and various image processing including NUC, electronic zoom, image compression and dual band fusion. When all of the B-Kit components are optically aligned and CCAs connected via electronic flexes the B-Kit provides to the host A-Kit dual band calibrated, fused digital imagery with four increasing levels of user selectable optical magnification while being survivable against laser, cyber, and nuclear radiation threats in accordance with (IAW) the Government developed Performance Specification (paragraph 2.1.1), Interface Control Document (paragraph 2.1.1.4), and mechanical drawings (paragraph 2.1.1.3). The B-Kit’s DCB, Afocal, Imager, and CCAs are designed to be interchangeable Shop Replaceable Units (SRU) within the host A-Kit sight assemblies. An image of the 3GEN FLIR B-Kit is shown in Figure 1 below.
