3.01 PREPARATION:

A. Preparation of Roadbed & parking area: Any high places in the road-bed or parking area shall be cut to grade and the resulting material hauled and deposited on low areas on fill slopes required to establish a smooth uniform grade. The road-bed and parking pad shall then be re-bladed and reshaped. The roadbed shall be compacted and all work that may be necessary to produce a completed and acceptable foundation shall be performed and the roadbed shall be in this specified condition at the time of placement of the base course.

Peekaboo Trailhead 05/2

2. When hauling is done over previously placed material, hauling equipment shall be routed as uniformly as possible over the entire width of previously constructed layers.

B. Mixing and Spreading: Each course placed shall be mixed to its full depth by means of power graders. During the mixing, water shall be added in the amount necessary to provide the optimum moisture content for compaction. When mixed, the material shall be spread smoothly to a uniform thickness, or in the case of the top course, to the cross section shown on the plans.

C. Compacting: Immediately following final spreading and smoothing, each layer shall be compacted full width by approved means of compacting equipment. Rolling shall progress gradually from the side to the center, parallel with the centerline of the road. Any irregularities or depressions that develop shall be corrected by loosening the material at these places and adding or removing material until the surface is smooth and uniform. Compaction of each layer shall continue until a density of not less than 90% of the maximum density determined according to AASHTO T 99, or other approved method, has been achieved.

3.03 FIELD QUALITY CONTROL:

A. Thickness Requirements: The thickness of the completed courses shall not vary more than 1/2-inch from the thickness shown on the plans.

B. Surface Requirements: The surface shall be tested with a 10-foot straight-edge furnished and operated by the Contractor when required by the Contracting Officer. Any areas where the surface variation exceeds 1/2-inch in 10 feet shall be reworked until the variation falls within this limit.
