Clear away all plant materials within the outlines of the new construction. Control the grading around the excavations so that the ground is pitched to prevent water from running into the excavated areas.
Scarify all surfaces to receive either backfill or concrete sidewalks. Compact all areas to receive new concrete. The material, while being compacted, shall contain the optimum moisture for compaction distributed uniformly throughout the layers. When the moisture content and condition of each spread layer is satisfactory, it shall be compacted to 95% of maximum density, standard proctor.
Grades not otherwise indicated shall be uniform levels or slopes between such points where elevations are given or between such points and existing grades. Spread excess approved soil evenly over areas at exterior not to receive sidewalks. Abrupt changes in slopes shall be rounded. Fill all excavations made for curbs and other items. Particular care shall be taken when rolling over areas where trenches or other excavations have been made and backfilled at irrigation pipes and underground power lines, etc. Make minor adjustments and modifications to final grade as directed by the Owner where actual grades vary slightly.
Place satisfactory top soil material, road base not acceptable, behind curbs and compact as per compacted fill. Bring finish fill material to flush with top of curb. Backfill excavations for concrete sidewalks finish to flush with top of concrete. Fill material cannot contain concrete pieces or sharp rocks.
Where grades are not indicated, leave positive slope away from structures on all grading.

1. Concrete Work. All concrete work shall comply with the Standard Construction Specifications for the City of Pueblo, Department of Public Works and the specifications listed below. The grade on all-new sidewalks and ramps shall exceed 1:20 except where noted. Cross slope on sidewalks shall not exceed 1:50.
Aggregate base course to be free draining fill conforming to ASTM C33 grading requirements. Washed gravel or crushed stone, 1/4 inch minimum, 3/4 inch maximum, #67 stone.
Use straight forms free of distortion and defects made of steel, wood, or other suitable material of size and strength to resist movement during concrete placement and to retain horizontal and vertical alignment until removal. Form coating to be non-staining form release agent that will not discolor or deface surface of concrete. Do not loosen, remove, or disturb forms until concrete has attained sufficient set to eliminate damage to the surface of the concrete.
Concrete approach, pavement, and type 2 gutter shall have #4 rebar at 18”cc Reinforcing steel to be ASTM A 615 including supplementary requirement (S1), Grade 60, deformed, and fabricated to required shapes and dimensions with tolerances complying with ACI 315. Support reinforcing bars on metal chairs and rigidly fasten with tie wires at all splices and at all crossing points and intersections in the position shown and point ends of wires away from forms. Place steel with 3” minimum concrete coverage for slabs directly placed on bearing soil and 1-1/2” for exposed concrete or concrete in contact with backfill.
Ready-Mixed Concrete is to conform to ASTM C 94 and ACI 304. Portland cement to conform to ASTM C 150, Type I or Type III with aggregates conforming to ASTM C 33 where the fine aggregate is to be natural sand and coarse aggregate to be crushed stone or gravel of No. 67 size and not to exceed more than 1/4 of the slab thickness. Air entraining admixture is to conform to ASTM C 260 and not exceed 3%. Fly ash is allowed as allowed by the City of Pueblo Department of Public Works. Calcium chloride is not permitted. Compression strength is to meet City of Pueblo standards 4,500 psi 1. with 34 gals/cu.yd. of fresh, clean, drinking water, 6 bags/cu.yd. of cement with maximum slump of 3-4 inches. Site mixed concrete is not permitted. Ready mixed concrete hauled in truck mixers or truck agitators shall be deposited within 90 minutes from the time the water is added to the mix. Before placing mixed concrete, the subgrade is to be free of standing water, snow, ice, or other foreign material and the forms thoroughly cleaned, secured in place, and coated with a form-release agent. Moisten sub-base to provide a uniform dampened condition at time concrete is placed. Place concrete to prevent segregation of mix and consolidate concrete along form faces and adjacent to transverse joints using care to avoid dislocation of reinforcing and forms. Concrete shall be placed, struck off, and consolidated by vibrating screed and finished with either a mechanical finishing machine or by hand finishing methods. Deposit and spread concrete in a continuous operation between transverse joints as far as possible. Place a construction joint and dowels if interrupted for more than 1/2 hour. Acknowledgement:___________________
(NOTE)
1. Compression strength of roadway areas shall be 4,500 psi with 34 gals/cu.yd. of fresh, clean, drinking water, 6 bags/cu.yd. of cement with maximum slump of 3-4 inches.
All concrete trucks shall be cleaned only in an area designated by owner to eliminate the possibility of concrete residue entering storm water. Trucks shall not be cleaned on paved areas or near any lawn areas. All materials shall be cleaned up and removed upon project completion.
Expansion joint material is to be 1/2 inch thick asphalt impregnated pre-molded fiber conforming to ASTM D 1751 extending entire depth and depressed 1/2 inch below top surface for joint sealant. Saw cut control joints at locations indicated in the walkthrough, but in no case, at intervals not to exceed 8’-0” in each direction. Start cutting as soon as the concrete has hardened sufficiently to prevent aggregates from being dislodged by the saw, usually 4 hours after finishing is complete. Joints are to be perpendicular to main reinforcing, are not to occur at major reinforcement splice lines, and continue reinforcing steel and welded wire fabric through the control joint. Fill typical joints with a multi-component polyurethane sealant complying with ASTM C 920, Type M, Grade P, Class 25, traffic-bearing substrate M. Perform initial finishing with power float followed by power troweling to produce a smooth surface relatively free of defects but which may contain some trowel marks. Perform subsequent finishing with hand trowels after surface has hardened sufficiently to produce a “ringing” sound when hand trowel is moving over the surface. Complete slab consolidation during hand troweling operations and produce a finished surface free of trowel marks with uniform texture and appearance. For traffic-bearing surfaces, bring the surface to float finish then draw a fiber bristle broom across surfaces perpendicular to main traffic route to produce a non-slip broom finish texture approved by the Owner’s Representative. Maintain surface free of traffic until concrete has regained its dry appearance. (NOTE): Initial finishing may be performed with hand tools (bull float and Fresno) in place of power floats and finishers to produce a smooth surface relatively free of defects but which may contain some trowel marks.
Curing is the protection of freshly installed concrete not in contact with forms from premature drying, excessively hot or cold temperatures, and mechanical injury to maintain minimum moisture loss at a relatively constant temperature for a period of time necessary for hydration of cement and proper hardening of concrete. Comply with ACI 301 for concrete curing except during which temperature of air in contact with concrete is above 50 degrees F has totaled seven 24-hour days (168 hours). If high early strength concrete is used, continue curing for a total of three 24-hour days. Prevent rapid drying at end of curing period. Wet steel forms that are heated by the sun and all wood forms in contact with concrete during the curing period Sealants. Fill typical joints with a multi-component polyurethane sealant complying with ASTM C 920, Type M, Grade P, Class 25, traffic-bearing, substrate M.
