MEMORANDUM FOR MICC-Fort Drum
SUBJECT: Brand Name Exact Match Memo for FedBid Buy [#]
1. The Winter Warfare Detachment, 10th SFG(A) requests procurement of the alpine touring (AT) ski, DPS Tour 1 Wailer 99 for use during unit training. In a product evaluation of different ski manufacturers, the DPS Tour 1, Wailer 99 performed the best of five brands evaluated. This purchase supports a life-cycle replacement of the older Karhu, Kilowatt and Aspect skis currently in the inventory.
2. Extensive market research was conducted from November 2017 through April 2018.
The DPS Tour 1, Wailer 99 proved to be a better AT ski than others evaluated. The DPS Tour 1, Wailer 99 is a light weight AT ski that comes in both 176cm and 184cm length. The weight of the 176cm length DPS Tour 1, Wailer 99 is 1355 grams per ski, which averages between 400-500 grams (0.80-1.12 pounds) less per ski than the competitors. The ski is meant for use in varied terrain, from groomed slopes for training beginners to back country ski movements in wooded terrain for military maneuvers.
The ski performed excellent in turning at low speeds for beginner and intermediate skiers and performed the best during high speed turns. The ski was easy to ascend while carrying heavy loads and pulling sleds due to its light weight and design. Overall the ski was very maneuverable through trees and in non-groomed and deep snow terrain. The ski incorporates all of the highest standards and technologies that are required to effectively conduct military movements through wooded terrain and in the back country with the AT skis.
3. For the reasons listed above, the Winter Warfare Detachment, 10th SFG(A) requests approval for purchase of the brand name item: DPS Tour 1, Wailer 99 ski in both the 176 and 184 lengths.
