INSTRUCTIONS FOR OBTAINING MASSACHUSETTS DEPARTMENT OF REVENUE CERTIFICATE OF GOOD STANDING
The Certificate of Good Standing is a document issued by the Massachusetts Department of Revenue evidencing that an individual, partnership, corporation or other organization is in good standing with respect to any and all returns due and taxes payable to the Commonwealth. The process for acquiring this document varies slightly for Individuals, compared to Businesses. Both are shown below.
Certificate of Good Standing - for Business Taxpayers
The fastest and easiest way to obtain a Certificate is online through MassTaxConnect. Before beginning this process, make sure that you have the entity's id number and a list of tax types filed with DOR readily available. Generally, the process takes less than a week, although it can take slightly longer.*
Certificate of Good Standing - for Individual Taxpayers
The fastest and easiest way to obtain a Certificate is via the online application, WebFile for Income. Before beginning this process, make sure that key authenticating data is readily available, including the entity's SSN number, requested refund amount or balance due from one of two recent Income Tax filings (in whole dollars only).
Once the applicant has been authenticated, users will be given an application number and asked to come back to the program in a couple of days. At that time, fully compliant taxpayers will be able to print a Certificate.*
*Processing of paper applications can take 4 to 6 weeks. We strongly recommend filing your request online if that option is available to you.
