Summary of Required Technical Services
The USGS requires a unique and specialized set of services to expand capabilities in the usage of cloud-hosted lidar data. Utilizing, The NSF funded OpenTopography project. These services broadly fall into three categories that span the needs of multiple USGS programs; (1) software development, (2) training and support, and (3) research and development. First, to enhance data mailto:lwilliams@usgs.gov utilization and stimulate creative applications the National Geospatial Program (NGP) requires a suite of readily accessible Jupyter notebooks that leverage existing APIs, cloud resources, and open source software tools and packages to make it easier for a variety of users of topographic data to efficiently access USGS 3DEP data for data processing and visualization workflows. Second, the
National Cooperative Geologic Mapping Program seeks to extend the capabilities of its community of Federal and State geologic mappers to leverage this data and by developing (1) extensions of these general tools as Jupyter notebook and a web portal to enable the generation of topographic derivatives that further enhance the identifiability of geologic features, (2) development and delivery of training modules in their applications, and (3) documentation of workflows for utilizing machine learning to classify geologic deposits from analysis of high-resolution topography.
