About this file

This is a Questions and Answers document from the Department of Energy regarding critical minerals materials available at Oak Ridge.

The document addresses two inquiries about lithium hydride shields containing depleted uranium. DOE confirms that nine smaller shields can be offered separately from the large shield with depleted uranium plates. Regarding material availability, DOE is awaiting a contractor schedule for characterization work and will determine if any DOE site wants the materials by the end of October. Following the property transfer regulations, the shields must be offered to state and local governments before commercial availability, with an additional 45-day waiting period after characterization is completed. The responsibility for obtaining the Department of Transportation packaging exemption for transport will be determined and incorporated into the final agreement between the parties.

Text version

Oak Ridge Critical Minerals Questions:

• For the lithium hydride, could the nine smaller shields be offered separately from the large shield with depleted uranium plates? And when do you expect the characterization work to finish and the decision on whether any DOE site wants the material, so private parties know when it could actually be available?

Yes, the nine smaller shields can be offered separately from the shield with depleted uranium.

DOE is awaiting a schedule from our contractor on the characterization work.

We will know if any DOE site wants the materials by the end of October. Per the property transfer regulations, the shields must then be offered to state and local governments before being made commercially available. That process is an additional 45 days after characterization is completed.

• When does DOE expect to decide whether other DOE sites will take the lithium hydride shields? And who would be responsible for obtaining the DOT packaging exemption for transport?

The DOT packaging exemption responsibility would be worked in the final agreement.
