About this file
This document is a timber sale prescription from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources - Forest Resources Division for a timber sale opportunity in Compartment 61173 Hardwoods located in Grand Traverse County and Tower CDP. The 122.2-acre sale includes thinning and creation of regeneration gaps in three stands of northern hardwoods. The contract work must be completed by August 30, 2024 and includes marking trees for harvest, paint line work, and GPS data collection. The prescription provides detailed specifications for timber marking, cruise layout, and deliverables. Contractors will be required to mark cut trees with orange paint, retain some older beech and aspen for wildlife, and create regeneration gaps with a minimum of 50% sugar maple seedlings.
The timber sale opportunity has an estimated basal area target of 80, with a minimum of 70 and maximum of 90. Contractors will be responsible for providing their own paint, and the DNR will supply paint on a schedule that must be coordinated with the contractor's work. All data and GPS files must be uploaded to the DNR's systems upon completion of the work.

| PRESCRIPTIONRow1: 1) In general, follow the "Compleat Marker" guidelines. Mark cut trees with orange paint. Avoid marking conifers, obvious cavity trees, or uncommon species (elm, birch, oak, etc.). |
2) Retain some older beech and aspen for wildlife (about 2 per acre unless otherwise specified), otherwise all beech and aspen greater than 2" at DBH will be designated for cutting in the contract. Beech and aspen trees to be cut should remain unmarked; mark the leave trees with orange "X". The contractor must ensure that mature beech trees to be cut have adequate falling paths.
Stand 29 - Stand is currently at an average of 128 basal area (BA). Thin stand down to a target BA of 80. Create 4 gaps that are 1-2 acres in size. These regeneration gaps will be where there is sugar maple regeneration present. If 4 pockets of sugar maple regeneration can't be found, talk to contract administrator to space gaps out accordingly. Cut all ironwood and beech down to 1".
Stand 127 - Thin stand down to a target BA of 80. Remove poor quality trees first, then work on spacing. Cut stand during dry summer conditions to create scarification.
Stand 136 - Mark stand to a target BA of 80. If sugar maple regeneration is present, marking stand down lower than the target BA is acceptable. Create 7 regeneration gaps that are 1-2 acres in size. These gaps must contain at least 50 percent sugar maple seedlings. Within these gaps, cut all trees that are merchantable. Protect all sugar maple seedlings in these gaps during harvest. Cut ironwood and beech down to 1" at DBH throughout sale area.
