About this file
This document is a Timber Sale Prescription from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources - Forest Resources Division for the C56 Contract Timber Sale in the Traverse City Forest Management Unit. The contract work can begin immediately and must be completed by September 1, 2023. The sale covers approximately 152.1 acres across three stands in Sections 10, 15, and 16. The treatment objectives include seed tree harvests with retention in oak/pine stands and a crown thinning in a red pine stand. The contract requires GPS boundary delineation, timber marking, and cruising specifications, and lists several project deliverables.
The contract does not include paint line work, which will be supplied by the DNR. Contractors are restricted to no more than two markers per cruise unit without prior approval, and must coordinate their work schedule with the DNR for paint supply. Tree data is to be recorded using the Mobile Map application and uploaded to ArcGIS Online upon completion. Shapefiles of the stands/VDUs will be provided by the DNR, and county imagery files are available if needed.

PRESCRIPTION
Stands 9 & 26 - Seed tree stand leaving 20 BA of a combination of white oak and conifer species (green paint will be used for this). In addition, leave a few scattered islands of representative species throughout each stand (~1 acre per island - red paint).
The objective of the sale is to release understory regeneration while still retaining mast and seed sources.
Stand 31 - Thin this stand down to 60 BA. In areas where dense, advanced regeneration is present, open the stand up a bit more to release this regen and monitor response. Focus removal on suppressed, forked, or otherwise poorly formed individual trees first then mark for spacing.

RESTRICTIONS
1. Forest Resources Division must be able to identify who did what on the timber sale.
2. The contractor may not have more than two markers in one cruise unit without prior approval.
3. Each marker should have an assigned area to mark (not strips).
PAINT
4. Call Joe Ventimiglia at (231) 878 - 0047 to make arrangements for paint.
5. Paint will be supplied from Traverse City Field Office.
6. Contractor’s work schedule must coincide with the DNR work schedule for paint supply.
7. The DNR will not be available on weekends or evenings.
DELIVERABLES
8. A list of names that marked or cruised each cruise unit.
9. A summary of paint used (in quarts).
10. All data, cruise and GPS, must be uploaded from MobileMap to InventoryManager.
Additional Information
Use the Sample Tree Ratio sample type. Record tree data for each plot starting with the first tree north using the Mobile Map application, then upload data into ArcGIS Online when completed. Use the plot layout function in MobileMap to ensure plots are well-distributed throughout each Stand/VDU. The default Stump Height = 0.5 feet. Mark each plot location with a stick in the ground with flagging attached, and also hang a 2nd piece of flagging nearby at about eye level, with the plot number written on the flagging.
Shapefiles for Stands/VDU’s will be provided by the DNR. County TPK imagery files are also available from the DNR if needed.
Measure tree data is not needed for residual trees, just tally by species.
