About this file
This is a Timber Sale Prescription document issued by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR), Forest Resources Division, for the Sault Ste. Marie Management Unit. The contract involves timber marking and cruising services for the Comp 102 timber sale located in T42N R06W, Sections 10, 11, 14, and 15 in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. The project encompasses three stands totaling approximately 244 estimated acres: Stand 14 (103.6 acres), Stand 37 (108.2 acres), and Stand 41 (32.2 acres), all classified as M9 hardwood cover type with initial basal areas of 81-110. The work includes single-tree selection marking to reduce basal area to specified levels (60-80 BA for Stands 14 and 41; 70-90 BA for Stand 37), creation of regeneration gaps approximately 50 feet in radius, timber cruising at approximately 165 cruise points distributed across three volume determination units, GPS boundary marking, and paint line work. Contract work may begin immediately and must be completed by August 31, 2025. The local DNR contact is Cody Flatt at 906-287-5320.
The prescription specifies detailed marking standards including two-sided slash marks on merchantable trees (minimum 10.6" DBH for sawlogs; 4.6" DBH for pulpwood), gap placement requirements, and stump marking on all marked trees. Paint lines are to be supplied by the Naubinway Field Office, with the contractor required to coordinate schedules with DNR staff availability. Key deliverables include identification of personnel who marked or cruised each cruise unit, a summary of paint used, and all cruise and GPS data uploaded to InventoryManager via MobileMap. Restrictions prohibit more than two markers per cruise unit without prior approval, require assigned marking areas rather than strip marking, and mandate that contractor personnel use flagging for plot centers and tree measurements during cruising operations.

PRESCRIPTION
Stand 14 (PU’s 1-3) - Mark stand to 60-80 BA. Leave all hemlock, oak, and healthy beech if they are present to maintain species diversity. Create gaps to promote hardwood regeneration and consider expanding existing gaps where good regeneration (knee high regeneration of such as maple, birch, black cherry, basswood) already exists. Treatment acreage may vary due to areas of low volume. Do not go down ridge on south end of stand; keep red line at top of ridge.
Stand 37 (PU’s 5-7) - Mark stand to 70-90 BA. Leave all hemlock, oak, and healthy beech if they are present to maintain species diversity. Create gaps to promote hardwood regeneration and consider expanding existing gaps where good regeneration (knee high regeneration of such as maple, birch, black cherry, basswood) already exists. Treatment acreage may vary.
Stand 41 (PU 4) - Mark stand to 60-80 BA.

Special Marking Instructions:
It is required that gaps be established during marking and all merchantable trees within the gaps be marked for cutting.
Gaps should be placed in areas of existing desirable regeneration, areas of high-risk timber, or adjacent to seed bearing trees such as oak and yellow birch. Existing gaps with desirable regeneration should be expanded to release that regeneration. The gaps should be placed greater than 75’ from one another.
1. Two-sided marking plus stump mark on all marked trees.
2. Favor (leave) the best future crop tree in place, regardless of species.
3. Mark stand to improve maneuverability within the stand for logging operations to occur.
4. If hawk nests are discovered within the stand while marking, contact the Naubinway Office.
5. Leave obvious nest or den trees; retain potential wildlife trees if none are present.

2. The contractor may not have more than two markers in one cruise unit without prior approval.
3. Each marker should have an assigned area to mark (not strips).
PAINT
4. Call Cody Flatt at (906) 287-5320 to make arrangements for paint.
5. Paint will be supplied from Naubinway Field Office.
6. Contractor’s work schedule must coincide with the DNR work schedule for paint supply.

DELIVERABLES
8. A list of names that marked or cruised each cruise unit.
9. A summary of paint used (in quarts).
10. All data, cruise and GPS, must be uploaded from MobileMap to InventoryManager.
Additional Information
When cruising, mark all plot centers with flagging both at ground level and in a tree nearby. Your first tree recorded must be clearly identified. For border line trees hang a flagging and indicating whether it was in or out. If you apply the walk-through method for a tree, indicate that on a piece of flagging. For all measure trees, mark either with flagging or paint where you measured DBH.
