About this file

This is a Timber Sale Prescription document issued by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Forest Resources Division for the GNA2 Scotts Boots Timber Sale located in the Shingleton Management Unit. The project encompasses 587 estimated acres across multiple compartments and stands requiring various timber treatments including single tree selection, crown thinning, low thinning, and shelterwood harvesting with retention. Contract work can commence immediately and must be completed by July 1, 2025. The primary services requested include timber marking (identifying trees to cut and trees to leave), timber cruising for volume determination, paint line work to delineate payment units and boundaries, and GPS data collection of marked boundaries. Specific deliverables include a list of personnel who marked or cruised each unit, a summary of paint used in quarts, and all cruise and GPS data uploaded to the DNR's InventoryManager system.

The prescription specifies detailed marking standards for each stand, with residual basal area targets ranging from 40 to 110 BA depending on stand type and management objective, with a tolerance of plus or minus 10 BA. Paint line work is included in the bid, with designated colors for exterior boundaries (blue for private land borders, red for Forest Service borders), payment units (yellow), and special markings (green for reserved trees, orange for rings and chevrons). The DNR will supply paint from the Shingleton Office, and the contractor's work schedule must coordinate with DNR availability during regular business hours. Matt Manders serves as the local contact for the sale at 906-202-5453. No bidding timeline, award date, or pricing information is specified in this prescription document.

PRESCRIPTION

Compartment 4 - Stand 1 (Mark to Cut) Cut all black cherry with black knot present.

Mark to 80 BA.

Remove in order of preference: aspen, balsam fir, beech, maple, cherry, hemlock, birch, white pine.

Retain large and very large diameter trees to become seed source.

Create canopy gaps around quality yellow birch and black cherry.

Create gaps up to 2 acres around very large diameter trees, and closer to 1 chain around smaller trees.

Create up to 3 to 5 gaps per acre.

Compartment 4 - Stand 3 (Mark to Cut) Cut all aspen; create an opening around the cut aspen clumps (more than 3 aspen in close proximity) up to 2 chains in diameter.

Cut all balsam fir.

Thin rest of stand down to 70-80 BA; aspen and balsam fir removal areas do not count against residual BA.

Remove based on tree form and quality. Size distribution is not as important this entry.

Cut all cherry with black knot.

Compartment 4 - Stand 5 (Mark to Cut) Mark to 80-90 BA of residual stocking; mark to 90 BA where existing stocking is 140 BA or greater.

Mark to release the best quality trees of any species; try to keep 30-40 BA of cherry where possible if quality is fair.

Leave yellow birch and hemlock if they look like they will persist until the next harvest (20 years).

Compartment 4 - Stand 6 (Mark to Cut) Reduce standing BA by 1/3 to approximately 110 BA.

Remove hardwoods and balsam fir, then poor form and small diameter red pine.

Compartment 4 - Stands 8, 21, 22 & 34 (Mark to Leave) Mark to leave 40 BA of white pine and a combination of black cherry, maple, spruce and yellow birch (where it is available). Try to leave trees with good crowns that will survive and be able to produce seed. Reserve hemlock (counts toward residual goal). There is a very large white pine marked in green to be reserved within Stand 21.

All aspen should be marked to leave within 500’ of the South Branch of Stutts Creek.

Compartment 4 - Stand 9 (Mark to Cut) Where current stocking is at 160 BA or less, mark to 130 BA. Where current stocking is 170 or above, mark to 140 BA. Mark to maintain the best quality trees (remove forked, damaged, poorly formed, etc.) and then for spacing;

good quality trees are usually are more important than even spacing.

Compartment 4 - Stand 12 (Mark to Cut) Mark all black cherry with black knot present.

Mark to 70-80 BA.

Remove in order of preference: aspen, balsam fir, beech, maple, cherry, hemlock, birch, white pine.

Do not cut aspen within 500’ of the South Branch Stutts River.

Retain large and very large diameter trees to become seed source. Leave beech that are actively being used by wildlife; these trees have very little to no timber value. Protect hemlock and white pine regen present.

Create canopy gaps around quality yellow birch and black cherry. Create gaps up to 2 acres around very large diameter trees, and closer to 1 chain around the smaller trees. Create up to 3 to 5 gaps per acre.

Compartment 4 - Stand 15 (Mark to Cut) Thin to 80 BA.

Mark all aspen and create an opening (1 to 2 chains in diameter) around groups of three or more cut aspen;

disregard BA in these gaps. Gaps do not count against residual BA. No more than 3 to 4 gaps per acre. When possible, place edge of gaps so that birch are on the edge for regeneration purposes. Where aspen groups are absent, remove: beech, balsam fir, black cherry with black knot, poor formed maple, then birch.

Retain super canopy white pine and white spruce.

Compartment 4 - Stand 28 (Mark to Cut) Target BA 70.

Do not mark aspen within 500’ of the South Branch Stutts Creek.
