About this file

This document is a Timber Sale Prescription from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources - Forest Resources Division for the Shingleton Compartment 173 Contract. The contract work can begin immediately and must be completed by September 1, 2025. The legal description includes Sections 4, 8, and 9 in Township 47N Range 17W, with an estimated 616 acres. The treatment objective is single tree selection in northern hardwood stands, with the creation of regeneration gaps. The contract includes marking paint lines, GPS boundary data, timber marking specifications, and timber cruising specifications. Special instructions cover aspects such as raptor nest protection and registered corner/witness tree preservation.

The contract requires the contractor to maintain a residual basal area between 70-90 square feet, with 200-300 regeneration gaps of 50-100 foot radius. Sawlog and pulpwood products are specified with minimum diameter and top diameter requirements. The contractor must coordinate with the local DNR contact for paint supply and provide deliverables such as a list of markers/cruisers, paint usage summary, and GPS data uploads.

Trees marked to cut Orange Special Marking Instructions:

Gap radius is defined as center of gap to the bowl of the boundary tree. It is required that the boundary of the regen gaps be established prior to marking and all trees within the gaps are designated for cutting. Gaps should be placed in areas of existing desirable regeneration; areas of high-risk timber. Existing gaps with desirable regeneration should be expanded to release that regeneration. The gaps should be placed greater than 75’ from one another.

1. A tree will only be considered marked when it has: Diagonal slashes on 2 opposite sides, 6’ above ground level AND one stump mark painted from 12” above the ground, extending into the ground.

2. Favor (leave) the best future crop tree in place, regardless of species.

3. Mark stand to improve maneuverability within the stand for logging operations to occur.

4. If hawk nests are discovered within the stand while marking, contact the Shingleton DNR Office.

5. Leave obvious nest or den trees; retain potential wildlife trees if none are present.

6. Avoid marking during wet weather conditions, or when tree boles are damp. Paint must last for the duration of the timber sale.

Additional Information

Discovery of a Raptor Nest: Do not mark within 100’ of any raptor nest trees. Report these to the local contact as soon as possible and directions will be given at that time.

When Registered Corners or Witness Trees are discovered:

- Any wooden posts encountered at corners must also be painted/protected.

- Bearing and/or witness trees discovered during the course of sale preparation must be protected. This can be accomplished by painting a ring completely around the tree at 4-6 feet above ground level with blue paint. In addition, tying ribbon on these trees helps alert loggers to their presence. Do not mark any trees for harvest if cutting them is likely to result in damage to corner monuments and/or bearing trees.

- Please report the condition of all corners, posts and bearing trees to the local contact.
