About this file
This document is a timber sale prescription from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources - Forest Resources Division for the Newberry Management Unit Contract Timber Sale C108. The contract area covers approximately 470.2 acres across multiple sections and involves a variety of silvicultural treatments including single tree selection, clearcuts with retention, and group selection. Contract work can begin immediately and must be completed by September 1, 2023. The prescription details the required paint line work, boundary GPS data collection, and timber marking and cruising specifications per individual stand.
The pricing for this contract will be based on the estimated acreage. The contractor will be responsible for providing a list of names for the personnel who marked or cruised each unit, a summary of paint used, and uploading all cruise and GPS data to the required systems. The contractor may not have more than two markers in a single cruise unit without prior approval, and each marker must be assigned a specific area rather than working in strips.

PRESCRIPTION
Stand 12: Single Tree Selection. Thin the stand to approximately 70-90 basal area while following standard marking guidelines. Leave a representation of forked trees (fork is at least ½ to 2/3 of the way up for future nest trees) and large wildlife trees. Target over-mature and poor form/health individuals while harvesting all diameter classes. Retain conifer and a few aspen in the stand, especially along adjacent aspen stands. Retain a representation of high-quality cherry where it exists. Limit elderberry and raspberry regeneration and promote sugar maple by doing the following: Avoid creating large canopy openings; avoid regeneration gaps larger than 1 chain diameter; avoid marking to a lower basal area than prescribed.
Stand 22: Single Tree Selection.
Stand 23: Clearcut with retention. Harvest all species present including aspen, maple, cherry, fir, spruce, ironwood and birch. Retain a component of fir. Pocket retention 3 - 5%. Retain some mature aspen in the red line.
Stand 26: Modified group selection. Target all aspen, ironwood and balsam fir for harvest creating canopy gaps for hardwood regeneration and succession. Areas of higher basal area mark overstory maple, cherry and birch providing for future forest health. Do not thin the stand below 70 basal area. Leave a representation of forked trees (fork is at least ½ to 2/3 of the way up for future nest trees) and large wildlife trees. Retain any white pine.
Stand 28: Thin stand to 70 - 90 basal area. Focus on poor form individuals (forks) for harvest but leave a few for nest trees. Nest trees have fork that is at least ½ to 2/3 of the way up. Avoid large regen gaps to limit raspberry and elderberry regen while promoting existing sapling regen. Retain conifer and a few aspen in the stand, especially along adjacent aspen stand. Mark any road hazards that exist within the site.
Stand 30: Single Tree Selection. Thin the stand to approximately 70-90 basal area while following standard marking guidelines. Target over-mature and poor form/health individuals while harvesting all diameter classes.
Leave a representation of forked trees (fork is at least ½ to 2/3 of the way up for future nest trees) and large wildlife trees. Retain conifer and a few aspen in the stand, especially along adjacent aspen stands. Retain a representation of high-quality cherry where it exists. Limit elderberry and raspberry regeneration and promote sugar maple by doing the following: Avoid creating large canopy openings; limit regeneration gaps to 1 chain in diameter; avoid marking to a lower basal area than prescribed.
Stand 34: Single Tree Selection. Thin the stand to 70 - 90 basal area. Target a variety of diameter classes using standard marking guidelines including larger and over mature individuals. Leave a representation of forked trees (fork is at least ½ to 2/3 of the way up for future nest trees) and large wildlife trees. Retain conifer and a few aspen in the stand, especially along adjacent aspen stands. Retain a representation of high-quality cherry where it exists. Limit elderberry and raspberry regeneration and promote sugar maple by doing the following: Avoid creating large canopy openings; avoid regeneration gaps larger than 1 chain diameter; avoid marking to a lower basal area than prescribed. Cut majority of the ironwood where present.
Stand 38: Single Tree Selection. Mark the stand to approximately 80 basal area targeting all species and size classes. Leave a representation of forked trees (fork is at least ½ to 2/3 of the way up for future nest trees) and large wildlife trees. Focus on poor form maple and cherry for removal while retaining a representation of high-quality cherry where it exists. Avoid large canopy gaps to limit raspberry and elderberry regeneration. Harvest all ironwood and any larger aspen however retain aspen in the red line where it exists.
Stand 40: Clearcut with retention. Cut all species including aspen, birch, maple, cherry, balsam and spruce.
Retain any large white pine.
Stand 41: Harvest all individuals across the stand to allow for coppice regeneration. Retain any white pine.
Pocket retention 3 - 5%. The old skid trail may serve as the southern boundary.
