About this file

This is a Timber Sale Prescription document issued by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources Forest Resources Division for the Gwinn Management Unit, Compartment 102. The project involves timber marking and harvesting services across 239.2 estimated acres distributed among ten stands (38, 13, 15, 3, 7, 28, 50, 76, 46, and 47) located in T44N R26W, sections 4, 9, 15, and 16. The contractor must mark trees for harvest according to Northern Hardwoods management objectives using single tree selection methods, with all work to begin immediately and be completed by September 1, 2025. Services include timber marking with specific paint line work (red for state boundary lines, blue for private land boundaries, and yellow for interior payment unit lines), GPS data collection of all sale lines and regeneration gaps using MobileMap, and contractor-supplied plot data showing residual basal area per acre. The local contact is Matt Yeo at the DNR Gwinn office (906-458-5379).

The prescription specifies a target residual basal area of 80 square feet per acre (minimum 70, maximum 90) for all stands, with regeneration gap installation requirements of one 50-foot radius gap per acre or one 75-foot radius gap per two acres. All marked trees must be identified with orange paint and diagonal slash marks on two opposite sides at six feet above ground level plus stump marks, while reserved trees receive green paint marks. Stand-specific instructions prioritize retention of hemlock, oak, cedar, pine, and mast-producing black cherry while removing oversized canopy trees and poor-quality timber. The contractor is responsible for obtaining landowner permission to cross private land, coordinating paint supply schedules with Matt Yeo (with paint provided from Gwinn), delivering all cruise and GPS data via MobileMap to InventoryManager, and providing documentation including a list of personnel who marked or cruised each unit and a summary of paint consumption.

PRESCRIPTION

1. Mark all stands according to specifications listed in the Timber Marking Specifications, and specific details obtained at the pre-work meeting.

2. All cutting and payment boundary paint lines are to be painted by the contractor in the approximate locations as shown on the map. The exterior line adjacent to state land will be painted in red. The unit lines are to be painted in yellow paint.

3. Area determination must be done for all units by contractor for the treatment area.

When establishing paint lines:

• Contractors are responsible for obtaining landowner permission before crossing private land.

• Avoid using dead or badly damaged trees – boundary trees must last for the duration of the timber sale (up to 5-6 years).

• Favor the use of reserved species such as hemlock, oak, or lesser occurring species.

• Avoid using small (fast-growing) stems and those exposed to direct sunlight.

• Mark Payment Unit lines so they can be seen from all sides.

Management Objective: Northern Hardwoods (Mark to Cut)

When marking, prioritize selection of trees to be cut in the following order:

1. Mark trees to be cut. Favor the best future crop tree in place, regardless of species.

2. Leave den and nest trees.

3. The objective is an all age stand structure with a max diameter of 18" DBH in hardwood stands.

4. Retain all hemlock, oak, cedar and pine unless removal is needed for operability.

5. Release oak on three sides to a residual BA of 60 sq ft. Favor mast producing black cherry.

6. Further guidance will be discussed at presale meeting.

7. Selectively thin hardwoods to 70-90 sq ft of BA. Favor to leave: oak, hemlock, mast producing black cherry, white pine, and cedar where present. Follow all guidelines set forth in "The Complete Marker".

8. In accordance with ‘Interim Guidance – Increased Minimum Gap Size and Regeneration Accountability for

Uneven-aged Management’, install one 50-ft radius gap per acre or one 75-ft radius gap per two acres, driven by the presence of well-stocked desirable advanced regeneration or adjacent to seed-bearing trees of uncommon desirable species.

Prescriptions

• Stand 38 / PU’s 5 & 6: Harvest stand down to 70-90 BA. Consider leaving underrepresented species like cherry while marking. Leave all hemlock, cedar, and yellow birch.

• Stand 13 / PU 4: Thin stand down to 70-90 basal area. Focus on removing poor quality trees and oversized canopy trees. While marking, favor leaving underrepresented trees such as yellow birch and cherry while cutting. Do not cut any hemlock, cedar, and beech.

• Stand 15 / PU 2: Thin stand down to 70-90 basal area. Retain all yellow birch. Favor to keep a few underrepresented species such as basswood, black cherry, and yellow birch.

• Stand 3 / PU 1: Thin stand down to 70-90 basal area. Consider leaving underrepresented species while marking such and black cherry and basswood. Leave all hemlock and cedar if found within stand.

• Stand 7 / PU 1: Thin stand down to approximately 70-90 BA. Consider leaving a few underrepresented species such as yellow birch while marking. Leave all cedar, hemlock, and basswood if found within stand.

• Stand 28 / PU 3: Selectively harvest stand down to 70-90 basal area. Favor to leave healthy cherry and yellow birch.

Do not cut cedar, hemlock, and healthy beech.

• Stand 50 / PU 7: Harvest stand down to 70-90 BA. Consider leaving underrepresented trees such as yellow birch, basswood and beech while marking for diversity. Do not cut cedar, white pine, hemlock, yellow birch and dead or alive beech.

• Stand 76 / PU 2: Thin stand down to 70-90 Basal area. While marking consider leaving a few underrepresented species such as yellow birch, basswood, and black cherry. Do not cut and hemlock, cedar, and beech if found.

• Stand 46 / PU 8: Harvest stand down to 70-90 BA. Consider leaving underrepresented species like cherry and yellow birch while marking. Leave all hemlock, cedar, and yellow birch if found.

• Stand 47 / PU 8: Harvest stand down to 70-90 BA. Consider leaving underrepresented species like cherry and yellow birch while marking. Leave all hemlock and cedar if found.
