About this file

This document is a Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Timber Sale Prescription for the Grayling Unit, specifically the GNA2 Gap timber sale located in T26N, R03E & R04E, Sections 17, 24, 29 / 18, 19, 20. The timber sale covers an estimated 339.4 acres across multiple stands, with contract work to begin immediately and be completed by 12/31/2025. The prescription involves two primary treatments: row thinning in stands 2, 6, 12, 18, and 23 (covering 129.8 acres of R5,R8,R9 cover type) and clearcut operations in stands 1, 11, 17, 34, 42, and 51 (covering 135.5 acres of J6,J8,UM9 cover type).

The timber sale includes specific marking guidelines, with a focus on well-formed, dominant red pine and selective cutting practices. The total merchantable residual basal area is set between 100-120, with sawlogs marked at a minimum diameter of 10.6" and pulpwood at 4.6". The prescription includes detailed instructions for paint marking, boundary work, and GPS tracking. The sale involves multiple stands with varying management objectives, including planted regeneration units and aspen management. Contractors will be required to follow precise marking guidelines, maintain specific row spacing, and adhere to species priority rules during the timber harvesting process.

PRESCRIPTIONRow1: Mark exterior sale and interior Payment Unit boundaries for all stands according to the details below, and on the attached maps. Only boundary line work is needed in Stands 1, 11, 13, 17, 26, 34, 42 & 51.

- Stands 2, 6, 12, 18 & 23 - Trees are to be marked for removal by both designating rows and/or Cut Tree Marking (CTM) with blue paint. Paint should be on both sides of trees and stump marks must extend at least 12 inches from the ground. Cut rows must be marked with blue "X"s designating rows for removal down the length of the row. Each row must be walked and have easily visible confidence marks down the entire row. Where rows are indistinct or not present, CTM these areas according to the marking guide below, either removing 1/3rd of the BA, or down to a residual of 100 BA (whichever comes first). Follow the marking guide below for priority of selection. Equipment operability within any given area is first priority for removal.

Marking Guide: Thin every third row of red pine, maintaining a minimum of 14 feet between cut rows. If this cannot be achieved, cut 2 rows and leave 3 rows. In areas where rows are not distinct, free thin down to approximately 100-120 BA.

Species Priority: Well-formed, dominant red pine // Cut all jack pine unless it is unmerchantable due to a defect (jack pine do not need to be marked as it will be spec'd out in the Timber Sale Contract) // Discriminate against poor form, small crowns and suppressed trees // Leave all white oak // Remove all jack pine // Release white pine // Do not cut aspen clumps.

This is included in the bid: On
This is not included in the bid: Off
Standards for marking lines against private land: Boundaries against private land are to be marked on the nearest tree favoring the USFS side of the harvest. All blazed trees along survey lines on the USFS side of the line should be marked with orange paint. Do not cover existing red blazes. Do not mark blazed trees on the private side of the line.
