Timber Sale Prescription Summary
This is a Timber Sale Prescription document from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR), Forest Resources Division, for the Gaylord C 44 Hardwoods 2 timber sale. The project involves harvesting timber from two stands (Stand 104 and Stand 111) totaling approximately 99.9 acres in Township 32N, Range 05W, Sections 35 and 36. The primary service requested is timber marking and cruising to implement single tree selection management in northern hardwood stands with a target residual basal area (BA) of 80 square feet per acre. Contract work may begin immediately and must be completed by an unspecified date in 2025. The project includes the establishment of regeneration gaps (15 gaps in Stand 104 and 3 gaps in Stand 111), timber cruising using MobileMap technology, GPS boundary marking, and comprehensive forest resource documentation.
The timber marking specifications indicate minimum merchantable diameters of 10.6 inches for sawlogs and 4.6 inches for pulpwood, with marked trees identified by orange paint on both sides. The contractor must manage for quality crop trees, favoring sugar maple and basswood while removing poorly formed and defective specimens. Deliverables include a list of personnel who performed marking and cruising work, a summary of paint used in quarts, and all cruise and GPS data uploaded to InventoryManager. The DNR will provide cruise layout files and paint supplies, contingent upon the contractor's work schedule alignment with DNR availability. Local contact is Zachary Crew at the Gaylord Field Office, (989) 370-9062, with email CrewZ@michigan.gov.

Stand 104 - Mark to cut with a target residual BA of 80. Establish regeneration gaps at least 75 feet in diameter, at a rate of 1 gap for every 5 acres. These gaps should not be perfect circles, and follow pockets of advanced regen where present. Gaps must be no larger than 100 feet in diameter, except where intolerant species are present. Include appropriate trail protection specs. Note archaeological comments in the compartment folder and establish appropriate buffers.
Stand 111 - Mark to cut stand with a target residual BA of 80. Establish 3 regeneration gaps in the stand around pockets that contain aspen. These gaps should include areas with 40% or more of aspen, where possible. Gaps must be at least of 150 feet in diameter.

Mark on both sides of the tree. On hills marks should face upslope/downslope. Manage for the best tree in place. Favor sugar maple, basswood, and under represented species for crop trees. Remove poorly formed and defective trees. Stump marks are to be placed from the ground up one foot, clearly visible in the crotch of the stump. Treat clumps as one tree; either mark all trees or leave all trees.
