About this file

This is a Timber Sale Prescription document from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) - Forest Resources Division for the C 44 Hardwoods 2 timber sale located in the Gaylord Management Unit. The document outlines a single tree selection timber harvest for two forest stands (Stand 104 and Stand 111) totaling 99.9 acres in sections 35 and 36 of Township 32N, Range 05W. The contract work can begin immediately and must be completed by September 1, 2025. The timber sale involves marking trees for harvest in northern hardwood stands, with specific instructions to maintain a target residual basal area of 80 and establish regeneration gaps in strategic locations.

The timber sale prescription provides detailed marking specifications, including minimum diameter requirements for sawlogs (10.6 inches) and pulpwood (4.6 inches), with trees marked to cut using an orange slash. The marking instructions emphasize managing for the best trees, favoring sugar maple, basswood, and underrepresented species while removing poorly formed and defective trees. The sale includes GPS boundary work, paint line marking, and requires all data to be uploaded from MobileMap to InventoryManager. Paint will be supplied by the Gaylord Field Office, and the DNR will not be available on weekends or evenings. The contractor must adhere to specific restrictions, including having no more than two markers per cruise unit and ensuring each marker has an assigned area to mark.

Mark on both sides of the tree. On hills marks should face upslope/downslope. Manage for the best tree in place. Favor sugar maple, basswood, and under represented species for crop trees. Remove poorly formed and defective trees. Stump marks are to be placed from the ground up one foot, clearly visible in the crotch of the stump. Treat clumps as one tree; either mark all trees or leave all trees.
