1 R9 5.3 141-170 Crown Thinning Planted Red Pine
2 A9 47.5 141-170 Clearcut With Reserve Aspen
3 R9 85.3 111-140 Crown Thinning Planted Red Pine
4 M9 22.7 111-140 Low Thinning Northern Hardwood
PRESCRIPTION
Name of Treatment - Commercial Thinning (6220) Desired Residual BA: Variable VDU #1 - 5.3 acres
Resultant stand appearance needs to be an even-aged stand that is dominated by high quality red pine and white pine, along with representative species of healthy oak, aspen, red maple, black cherry and paper birch.
MARKING GUIDE STANDARDS:
Thin stands 1/3 +/- of the BA present where red pine is featured, with an emphasis on retaining and releasing the healthiest, most vigorous trees present. Mark for operability and reduce damage to residual trees.
Mark for removal red pine, hardwood [except oak], aspen and spruce/fir species by the following:
1. Provide a four-sided crown release to healthy white pine, hemlock, cedar and oak by marking the removal species listed above of any size.
2. Favor the retention of red pine trees greater than 13'' at DBH, and provide a four-sided crown release by marking the removal species mentioned above that are less than 13'' at DBH. Do not allow this step to constrict the intent of thinning stand. It is good to have variable density, but ensure the logging can occur.
3. Areas containing aspen, spruce and balsam - Remove all to regenerate aspen. This will increase species and structural diversity within the stand.
4. If the basal area is still high, focus on the relative spacing and crown touching, and provide about 10-15 foot spacing.

PRESCRIPTION
Name of Treatment - Clearcut (4113) Desired Residual BA: See Below VDU #2 - 47.5 acres
Resultant stand appearance needs to be a near-complete open condition with some small groups of trees retained (if available) to allow every opportunity for aspen or other hardwoods to regenerate and become established. As a general rule, average basal area should not exceed 5 ft2/ac.
MARK/CRUISE:
• All merchantable-sized tree species unless designated with orange paint band or species listed as retention below.
Tree Retention:
• Generally retain healthy hemlock, white pine, elm, oak and cedar.
• Any species, possessing wildlife habitat attributes (e.g. cavity).
Name of Treatment - Commercial Thinning (4220) Desired Residual BA: 80-120 ft2/ac VDU #3 - 85.3 acres
Resultant stand appearance needs to be an even-aged stand that is dominated by high quality red pine and white pine along with representative species of healthy jack pine, oak, aspen, red maple, black cherry and paper birch.
MARKING GUIDE STANDARDS:
Thin stand to 80 to 120 BA, but not more than 1/3 +/- of the BA present where red pine is featured, with emphasis on retaining and releasing the healthiest, most vigorous trees present. Mark for operability and reduce damage to residual trees.
Tree Retention:
• Red and white pine should be considered the featured tree species, so efforts to remove red & white pine trees with obvious disease issues must be a priority.
• Mark other species as appropriate but preserve healthy examples of all species present.
• Generally retain healthy hemlock, cedar and oak; consider releasing them wherever it is convenient to do so.
• If cherry or paper birch are marked to cut, provide adequate space to encourage sprouting to maintain these species in the stands.
• Where aspen is encountered, it may be left in place or cut and regenerated depending on condition and age.
• Retention pockets ranging from 0.5 - 2 acres may be left undisturbed where age class diversity is evident and areas that feature a high percentage of reserved species. Also, retain patches of timber where the majority of the trees would yield one merchantable stick.
Name of Treatment - Commercial Thinning (4210) Desired Residual BA: 80-100 ft2/ac VDU #4 - 22.7 acres
MARKING GUIDE STANDARDS:
• Do not mark below 60 ft2/ac and no more than 40% of the initial BA, regardless of risk or quality.
• GENERALLY RETAIN: Healthy black cherry, hemlock, white pine, red pine, elm, oak and cedar unless needed to be removed for logging operations.
• GENERALLY FAVOR ALL SPECIES OTHER THAN MAPLE AND IRONWOOD. Favor less common non-high-risk species, but not at the expense of the best quality trees. This is usually addressed in Step #3, where if most conditions are relatively equal, continue to improve the relative spacing by marking ironwood, red and sugar maple to meet desired BA.
MARK BY ORDER OF REMOVAL
1. HIGH RISK: Remove most high-risk trees that are likely to die between cutting cycles (assume 15 years). Consider as high risk most mature aspen, ironwood, red maple with defects, and unhealthy paper birch; in addition to all merchantable-sized jack pine, balsam fir and white spruce.
2. RELEASE CROP TREES: Remove 1-2 poorer quality crown competitors to encourage crown development of dominant and co-dominant species. Provide full crown release to white pine. Oak should be released on 3 sides to an average BA of 60 ft2.
3. VIGOR: Remove suppressed and intermediate crown position trees.
4. FORM & QUALITY: FROM BELOW - Remove poorly formed stems, based on usable/potential log length; in addition, trees with noticeable defects (seams, sweep, cankers, low forks, etc.).
5. SPACING: FROM BELOW - Improve the relative spacing of trees where crowns are overlapping or near-touching.
6. DO NOT INTENTIONALLY CREATE GAPS: Unlike single-tree selection, we want to capture as much of the solar resources as possible.
