About this file
This document contains a Timber Sale Prescription for the DNR (Department of Natural Resources) Crystal Falls GNA2 Broken Bridge Timber Sale in Iron County and Croswell City, Michigan. The 484.5-acre sale involves commercial thinning and single-tree selection treatments to improve wildlife habitat, species diversity, and stand quality. The contract work can begin immediately and must be completed by August 15, 2023. The prescription outlines detailed marking guidelines for retaining healthy trees, removing high-risk and poor-quality trees, and creating regeneration gaps. The contract requires the successful bidder to provide GPS data, a list of markers, and paint usage summaries. The document also includes specifications for timber cruising, paint line work, and other requirements.
The pricing and funding details are not explicitly stated in the document. However, the sale is part of the Good Neighbor Authority (GNA) program, which allows the U.S. Forest Service and state agencies to collaborate on forestry projects. Bidders should review the terms carefully and contact the local DNR representative Tyler Ritchie with any questions.

PRESCRIPTION
Name of Treatment – Commercial Thinning WSR (6220) Desired Residual BA: Variable VDU 1 – 25.0 Acres
Resultant stand appearance needs to be an even-aged stand that is dominated by high quality red pine and white pine along with representative species of healthy oak, aspen, red maple, black cherry and paper birch.
MARKING GUIDE STANDARDS:
Thin stands 1/3 +/- of the BA present where red pine is featured, with emphasis on retaining and releasing the healthiest, most vigorous trees present. Mark for operability and reduce damage to residual trees.
Mark for removal red pine, hardwood [except oak], aspen and spruce/fir species by the following:
1. Provide a four-sided crown release to healthy white pine, hemlock, cedar and oak by marking the removal species listed above of any size.
2. Favor the retention of red pine trees > 13” DBH, and provide a four-sided crown release by marking the removal species mentioned above that are < 13” DBH. Do not allow this step to constrict the intent of thinning stand. It is good to have variable density, but ensure the logging can occur.
3. Areas containing aspen, spruce and balsam remove all to regenerate aspen this will increase species and structural diversity within the stand.
4. If basal area is still above desired, focus on the relative spacing and crown touching, and provide about 10-15 foot spacing
Name of Treatment – Commercial Thinning (4220) Desired Residual BA: 80-120 ft2/ac VDU 2 – 7.3 Acres
Resultant stand appearance needs to be an even-aged stand that is dominated by high quality red pine and white pine along with representative species of healthy jack pine, oak, aspen, red maple, black cherry and paper birch.
Thin stand to 80 to 120 BA, but not more than 1/3 +/- of the BA present where red pine is featured, with emphasis on retaining and releasing the healthiest, most vigorous trees present. Mark for operability and reduce damage to residual trees.
Tree retention:
• Red and white pine should be considered the featured tree species, so efforts to remove red & white pine trees with obvious disease issues must be a priority.
• Mark other species as appropriate but preserve healthy examples of all species present.
• Generally retain hemlock, cedar and oak; consider releasing them wherever it is convenient.
• If cherry or paper birch are marked to cut, provide adequate space to encourage sprouting to maintain these species in the stands.
• Where aspen is encountered, it may be left in place or cut and regenerated depending on condition and age.
• Retention pockets ranging from ½ to 2 acres may be left undisturbed where age class diversity is evident and areas that feature a high percentage of reserved species. Also, retain patches of timber where the majority of the trees would yield one merchantable stick.
3 of 7 R4038 (Rev. 03/16/2022)
Name of Treatment - Single-Tree Selection WSR (4151) Desired Residual BA: 70-90 ft2/ac VDU 3 – 139.9 Acres
• Do not mark below 60 ft2/ac and no more than 40% of initial BA regardless of risk or quality.
• GENERALLY RETAIN: Black cherry, hemlock, aspen, white pine, red pine, elm, oak and cedar unless removal needed for logging operability.
• GENERALLY FAVOR ALL SPECIES OTHER THAN MAPLE AND IRONWOOD: Favor less common species but not at the expense of the best quality trees. This is usually addressed in Step #3, where if most conditions are relatively equal, continue to improve the relative spacing by marking ironwood, red and sugar maple to meet desired BA.
MARK BY ORDER OF REMOVAL
1. HIGH RISK: Mark diseased/structurally damaged trees of any size class (die within next 15 years) that still contain merchantable products unless needed for other resource values (cavity trees).
Consider most mature aspen, black ash, red maple >15” DBH, fir and spruce as high risk. However, avoid marking large aspen (>16” DBH), especially if large drop zone is needed to fell the tree. This effort will contribute to the 2-3 wildlife tree objectives.
2. QUALITY DEVELOPMENT: Identify the best crop trees in the stand and provide a release by marking two main crown competing trees of lesser quality. Generally allow competition among closely spaced crop trees to preserve as much quality as possible while adhering to desired BA.
Oak should be released on 3 sides to an average BA of 60 ft2.
3. DENSITY/MATURITY/SPACING: If BA is still above desired, continue to improve stand quality and growing space by marking fair and marginal quality trees (mostly 6-10” DBH class). First identify trees that are:
3a – Unacceptable Growing Stock: Trees of any size that are likely to survive for decades but have structural/growth/disease issues; and/or exhibit signs of marginal improvement or significant volume loss; and/or trees that exhibit signs of suppression and are less likely to develop sawlog potential. If after addressing this part of the step and the BA is still higher than desired, then look at:
3b – Acceptable Growing Stock: Trees that have sawlog potential but possess slight quality issues specific to form, structure, soundness. Examples are sweep, low branching, old branch stubs or epicormic sprouting. This category can also include hardwood trees that are arriving at biological maturity and includes: black cherry >15” DBH; sugar maple and yellow birch >19” DBH; white ash and basswood >21” DBH. (Note: This step can come first in step #3 if these large sawtimber sized trees form closely spaced groups.)
If BA is still above desired, then continue marking other additional trees to improve the relative spacing and achieve desired BA.
4. REGENERATION GAPS: Install approximately one 66’ x 66’ gap every three acres. Utilizing the removal of large sawtimber trees and/or groups of poor-quality trees. It is recommended to do this first, and then mark remainder of stand to 70-90 ft2/ac to achieve the desired residual BA.

Name of Treatment - Single-Tree Selection (4151) Desired Residual BA: 70-90 ft2/ac VDU 4 – 312.3 Acres

• GENERALLY RETAIN: Healthy black cherry, hemlock, aspen, white pine, red pine, elm, oak and cedar unless removal needed for logging operability.
• GENERALLY FAVOR ALL SPECIES OTHER THAN MAPLE AND IRONWOOD: Favor less common species but not at the expense of the best quality trees.
