About this file
This is a Timber Sale Prescription document issued by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Forest Resources Division for the Colonel Compilation timber sale located in the Cadillac Management Unit in Wexford County. The sale encompasses 150.5 estimated acres across multiple stands within Township 24N, Range 11W, Sections 1, 2, 3, and 4. The project involves timber marking and harvesting operations across 11 stands with varying treatments including low thinning, clearcutting with retention, seed tree harvesting, single tree selection, overstory removal, group selection, and shelterwood methods. Contract work may begin immediately following a pre-work meeting scheduled before October 1, 2025, and must be completed by July 1, 2026. The timber sale is accessed via state forest roads north of W 4 Road near Buckley, Michigan. Local contact for the sale is Ban Lachman at the Manton Field Office, telephone (231) 340-3607.
The scope of work includes timber marking specifications with designated basal area (BA) targets for each stand, ranging from 20 BA to 110 BA residual, along with boundary delineation and GPS data collection. Paint line work is included in the bid and involves marking exterior boundaries against private land in blue, exterior boundaries against state land in red, interior payment units in yellow, and retention pockets in red with regeneration gaps marked in green. Deliverables include a list of personnel who marked each cruise unit, a summary of paint used in quarts, and all GPS data recorded and synced with the Field Maps application. The document specifies that contractors may not have more than two markers in one cruise unit without prior approval and that each marker should have an assigned area rather than working in strips. The DNR will supply paint and coordinate work schedules accordingly, with no availability on weekends or evenings.
