About this file
The document is a Timber Sale Prescription from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources - Forest Resources Division for the "Colonel Compilation" timber sale located in Wexford County. The sale covers 150.5 estimated acres across Sections 1, 2, 3, and 4 in Township 24N, Range 11W, with work scheduled to begin immediately and be completed by July 1, 2026. The prescription involves multiple forest management treatments across 11 different stands, including low thinning, clearcut with retention, seed tree, single tree selection, overstory removal, group selection, and shelterwood techniques for various cover types such as planted red pine, aspen, natural jack pine, mixed northern hardwoods, and sugar maple.
The timber sale includes specific marking instructions using green and orange paint, with GPS boundary data to be provided. The treatment objectives vary by stand, focusing on maintaining forest health, regeneration, and selective harvesting. Key specifications include marking trees to specific basal area ranges, retaining certain tree species, creating regeneration gaps, and managing tree density. Paint line work will be performed with blue lines for exterior boundaries against private land and red lines for state boundaries. The local contact is Ban Lachman, who can be reached at LachmanB@michigan.gov or 231-340-3607, with paint to be supplied from the Manton Field Office. Contractors are required to follow detailed restrictions, including limits on the number of markers per cruise unit and specific deliverable requirements.
