About this file

This is a Timber Sale Prescription document issued by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Forest Resources Division for the Cadillac Management Unit, specifically timber sale C114 located in Town 23N, Range 07W, Sections 3, 12, 13 (Compartment 63114). The project encompasses approximately 402.7 acres across 13 stands requiring various timber harvesting treatments including seed tree harvesting, shelterwood cutting, single-tree selection, clearcuts with retention, and final harvest operations. Contract work can begin immediately and must be completed by September 1, 2025. The project involves timber cruising with approximately 348 cruise points across multiple Volume Distribution Units (VDUs) and requires marking of timber stands using specific color-coding standards (orange for trees to cut, green for trees to leave). Paint line work marking boundaries against private land (blue), state land (red), and interior payment units (yellow) is included in the bid. All painted boundaries must be GPS-mapped using MobileMap and delivered to the DNR, with cruise and GPS data subsequently uploaded to InventoryManager.

The contract specifies detailed timber marking specifications with minimum diameter-at-breast-height (DBH) requirements for sawlogs (10.6 inches) and pulpwood (4.6 inches), along with specific basal area retention targets for each stand. The DNR will supply paint from the Cadillac Field Office, and the contractor's work schedule must align with DNR availability during standard business hours. Key deliverables include a list of personnel who marked or cruised each unit, a summary of paint used measured in quarts, and all cruise and GPS data uploaded to the inventory management system. Local contact for the project is Andrew Krugh at (906) 291-0124, and contractors are restricted from having more than two markers in a single cruise unit without prior approval. Payment will be based on the estimated acreage, and each marker must be assigned a designated area rather than strip patterns.

PRESCRIPTION

Stand 1 - Leave 20-40 BA focusing on leaving mast producing trees. Leave all birch, cedar and hemlock, these species will be part of the residual BA.

Stand 2 - Leave 40-60 BA focusing on leaving quality trees in place. While marking, create some regen gaps where they are best fit.

Stand 5 - Remove 1/3 of the white pine BA. In addition, cut all aspen and red maple within the stand.

Stands 88 & 103 - Cut all species 4 inches or more at DBH. Leave 3-10% interior retention.

Stands 98 - Thin stand to ~120 BA.

Stand 100 - Cut all aspen and red maple 4 inches or more at DBH. Spruce and pine can only be cut for operational needs.

Stands 109 & 110 - Thin stand to ~120 BA, focusing on releasing quality red pine.

Stands 119, 120 & 126 - Cut all species 2 inches or more at DBH, leaving no retention due to small size. In addition, cut all scotch pine regardless of size.

Stand 127 - Final harvest leaving 3-5 white pine and oak per acre, where present. Cut all species 4 inches or more at DBH, except do not cut any cedar or hemlock. Leave 3-10% interior retention pockets.
