About this file
This document is a Timber Sale Prescription for the Michigan Department of Natural Resources - Forest Resources Division for the 103 Pine Timber Sale. The project involves 119.3 acres of low thinning in two stands, Stand 75 (9.2 acres) and Stand 98 (110.1 acres), in Wexford County and Capac Village. The contract work can begin immediately and must be completed by 08/01/2023. The prescription includes marking the stands to specific residual basal area targets, with direction on tree selection. The document also outlines the paint line work required, including exterior lines against private and state land, as well as interior payment unit boundaries. GPS data files will be provided, and all painted boundaries must be GPS'd and delivered to the DNR.
The timber marking specifications detail the minimum diameter and top diameter for sawlogs and pulpwood. Trees marked to leave will be painted green, and trees marked to cut will be painted orange. The timber cruising specifications include details on the cruise layout and the number of cruise points required. The document also includes several restrictions, such as the contractor not having more than two markers in one cruise unit without prior approval, and the contractor's work schedule needing to coincide with the DNR's work schedule for paint supply.

PRESCRIPTION
Stand 75 - Mark stand to an average residual Basal Area of 110. Focus on removing deformed and suppressed trees first, then co-dominate trees to meet BA specifications.
Stand 98 - Mark stand to an average residual Basal Area of 90. Thin from above. Remove all jack pine via timber sale spec. No marking of jack pine needed. Then focus on releasing well-formed, large pulp and small log size red pine on at least three sides. This can be accomplished by targeting dominate log size red pine first, then remove suppressed and co-dominant trees to reach the target residual BA.
