About this file

This is a Timber Sale Prescription document from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources - Forest Resources Division for the GNA2 Thunderbolt timber sale (11-815-21-01) in Baraga Township, Houghton County. The prescription covers 273.9 acres across multiple stands and requires two types of treatments: single-tree selection on 137.8 acres targeting a residual basal area of 70-90 sq ft/acre, and clearcut with retention on 136.1 acres. The contract work can begin immediately and must be completed by August 1, 2021. The project includes specific marking guides for tree selection, paint line specifications, and timber cruising requirements.

The prescription details technical specifications for marking and measuring trees, including minimum diameter requirements of 10.6" for sawlogs and 4.6" for pulpwood. The contractor must use Sample Tree Ratio sampling methods with specific basal area factors and sample ratios. Paint will be supplied by the DNR's Baraga office, and the contractor must coordinate their work schedule with DNR staff. The contractor must attend a pre-work meeting, provide plot data showing residual basal area per acre, upload all cruise and GPS data to InventoryManager, and submit documentation of paint usage and personnel assignments for each cruise unit.

PRESCRIPTION

For Prescriptions see attached “Marking Guide” sections below.

Cruising will be done by Stand/VDU, not by payment unit

2 of 6 R4038 (Rev. 04/06/2020)

MARKING GUIDE:

Name of Treatment – Single-Tree Selection (4151)

Desired Residual BA: 70-90 ft2/ac

Stand/VDU: 10, 108, 113, 115, 117, 119, 122

Acres – 137.8

MARKING GUIDE STANDARDS:

• Do not mark below 60 ft2/ac and no more than 40% of initial BA regardless of risk or quality.

• GENERALLY RETAIN: Black cherry, hemlock, white pine, red pine, elm, oak and cedar unless removal needed for logging operability.

• GENERALLY FAVOR ALL SPECIES OTHER THAN MAPLE AND IRONWOOD: Favor less common species but not at the expense of the best quality trees. This is usually addressed in Step #3, where if most conditions are relatively equal, continue to improve the relative spacing by marking ironwood, red and sugar maple to meet desired BA.

MARK BY ORDER OF REMOVAL

1. HIGH RISK: Mark diseased/structurally damaged trees of any size class (die within next 15 years) that still contain merchantable products unless needed for other resource values (cavity trees).

Consider most mature aspen, black ash, red maple >15” DBH, fir and spruce as high risk. However, avoid marking large aspen (>16” DBH), especially if large drop zone is needed to fell the tree. This effort will contribute to the 2-3 wildlife tree objectives.

2. QUALITY DEVELOPMENT: Identify the best crop trees in the stand and provide a release by marking two main crown competing trees of lesser quality. Generally allow competition among closely spaced crop trees to preserve as much quality as possible while adhering to desired BA. Oak should be released on 3 sides to an average BA of 60 ft2.

3. DENSITY/MATURITY/SPACING: If BA is still above desired, continue to improve stand quality and growing space by marking fair and marginal quality trees (mostly 6-10” DBH class). First identify trees that are:

3a – Unacceptable Growing Stock: Trees of any size that are likely to survive for decades but have structural/growth/disease issues; and/or exhibit signs of marginal improvement or significant volume loss; and/or trees that exhibit signs of suppression and are less likely to develop sawlog potential. If after addressing this part of the step and the BA is still higher than desired, then look at:

3b – Acceptable Growing Stock: Trees that have sawlog potential but possess slight quality issues specific to form, structure, soundness. Examples are sweep, low branching, old branch stubs or epicormic sprouting. This category can also include hardwood trees that are arriving at biological maturity and includes: black cherry >15” DBH; sugar maple and yellow birch >19” DBH; white ash and basswood >21” DBH. (Note: This step can come first in step #3 if these large sawtimber sized trees form closely spaced groups.)

If BA is still above desired, then continue marking other additional trees to improve the relative spacing and achieve desired BA.

4. REGENERATION GAPS: Install approximately one 66’ x 66’ gap every three acres. Utilizing the removal of large sawtimber trees and/or groups of poor-quality trees. It is recommended to do this first, and then mark remainder of stand to 70-90 ft2/ac to achieve the desired residual BA.

MARKING GUIDE:

Name of Treatment – Clearcut

Desired Residual BA – see below

Stand/VDU: 106,109, 112, 116, 118, 120, 121

Acres – 136.1

Resultant stand appearance needs to be a near-complete open condition with some small groups of trees retained (if available) to allow every opportunity for aspen to regenerate and become established. As a general rule, average basal area should not exceed 5 ft2/ac.

MARK/CRUISE:

• All merchantable-sized tree species unless designated with red paint band, indicating retention.

Tree Retention:

• Generally retain hemlock, white pine, red pine, elm, oak and cedar.

• This effort should create a group or groups of retained trees, rather than scattered single-tree retention.

• Retention groups should generally be 33’ x 33’.

• Consider healthy species to act as a trigger to create groups, these species include: hemlock, white and red pine, elm, oak and cedar.

• Mark healthy species, other than the species listed above, via orange paint banding for retention.

• Any species, possessing wildlife habitat attributes (e.g. cavity).

• Mark 2-3 >16” DBH aspen via orange paint banding for retention.

SPECIAL MARKING INSTRUCTIONS:

Pulpwood and sawtimber marks will be a single paint slash well-marked on both sides of tree, all marked trees must have stump marks. Keep slash marks high for visibility during winter harvest (approx. 6 feet above ground level). Stump marks must be well-marked in order to last several years and intersect the ground. Be aware there may be small, unmapped wetlands or drainways nested within the marking units, look for signs of bed/bank along with plant species that are known to occupy wet sites. Exact buffering requirements for unmapped wetlands and drainways will be addressed at the pre-work meeting. Be aware of all slopes while marking. For slopes between 18-35%, mark to support logging operations and to avoid erosion/soils damage.

All slopes deemed inoperable and/or greater than 35% will be excluded by not marking these areas. The contractor must furnish the DNR with plot data showing residual BA/Ac for payment units to be checked (Self Administration). This is due before The DNR checks the marking. The contractor is responsible for checking all workers on the sale. Final marking details are to be discussed at the pre-work meeting.
