About this file
The document is a Timber Sale Prescription issued by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) - Forest Resources Division for the GNA2 Sockeye timber sale located in the Baraga Management Unit. The sale involves selective timber harvesting across 15 payment units totaling 755.1 acres, primarily focused on single tree selection in hardwood stands and a commercial thin in a red pine stand. The contract work can begin immediately and must be completed by December 31, 2025, with a planned year of entry in 2026. The sale is located in Township 46N, Range 38W, covering sections 10-15, and can be accessed via multiple federal forest roads.
The timber sale prescription specifies detailed marking guidelines, including reducing basal area to 70-90 square feet, favoring specific tree species like oak, hemlock, white pine, and cedar. The marking will use blue and teal paint, with specific payment units designated for each color. The DNR will supply the paint and conduct pre-work meetings with the contractor. Contractors are required to follow strict guidelines about marking trees, leaving den and nest trees, and maintaining an all-age stand structure with a maximum diameter of 18" DBH in hardwood stands. The sale includes provisions for protecting registered corners and witness trees, and requires the contractor to provide a list of names who marked or cruised each unit and a summary of paint used.

PRESCRIPTION
Single Tree Selection (Payment Units 1-14) – Selectively thin hardwoods to 70-90 square feet of basal area. Favor oak, hemlock, white pine and cedar where present. Oak should be released on 3 sides to an average BA of 60 sq ft. Where 30 sq ft or more of hemlock occur, thin to less than 100 sq ft of BA. Around areas of heavy hemlock, open up the drip edge to encourage hemlock seedling establishment.
1) Mark trees to be cut (blue/teal paint). Favor the best future crop trees in place, regardless of species. Payment Units 9, 12 and 13 are to be marked with teal paint. Payment Units 1-8, 10, 11 and 14 are to be marked with blue paint.
2) Leave den and nest trees.
3) The objective is an all age stand structure with a max diameter of 18” DBH in hardwood stands.
4) Retain all hemlock, cedar and pine unless removal is needed for operability. Oak should be favored where present, but can be marked if it makes up a significant portion of the BA, or if the tree has a high risk of mortality.
5) Where there is 30 sq ft or more of hemlock, thin to less than 100 sq ft of basal area. Around areas of heavy hemlock, open the drip edge to encourage hemlock seedling establishment.
6) Release oak on three sides to a residual BA of 60 sq ft. Favor mast producing black cherry.
7) Further guidance will be discussed at presale meeting.
8) Selectively thin hardwoods to 70-90 sq ft of BA. Favor to leave: oak, hemlock, mast producing black cherry, white pine, red pine and cedar. Follow the guidelines set forth in “The Complete Marker”.
Red Pine Thinning (Payment Unit 15) – Selectively thin red pine to 70-90 square feet of basal area, focusing on the lowest quality stems for removal. Favor oak, hemlock, white pine and cedar where present. All merchantable mixed species not listed above are to be marked at breast height for harvest.
1) Mark trees to be cut with blue paint. Favor the best future crop trees in place, regardless of species.
2) Leave den and nest trees.
3) Continue developing understory diversity by thinning.
4) Retain all oak, hemlock, white pine and cedar unless needed for operability.
5) Further guidance will be discussed at presale meeting.

Put upper marks 6' above the ground on two opposite sides of the tree that are visible from all sides of the tree. All marked trees must have stump marks. All cruising will be done by DNR staff once a Payment Unit is completed and approved of by DNR staff. Final marking details are to be discussed at the pre-sale meeting. Avoid marking in wet weather conditions, or when tree boles are damp.
The sale will be marked with blue and teal Nelson paint, supplied by DNR staff. Payment Units 9, 12 and 13 will be marked with teal (Nelson) paint - This is because the adjacent sale was previously marked in blue paint, and has yet to be harvested at the date of the timber sale prep for GNA2 Sockeye.

Additional Information
Pre-work Meeting: The contractor must schedule and attend a prework meeting with the Baraga DNR staff. Contractor regulates marking by unit – residual BA to be sent into GNA2 DNR staff for filing as units area completed. Residual BA will also be cross referenced by DNR staff during marking inspections.
When Registered Corners or Witness Trees are discovered:
- Any wooden posts encountered at corners must also be painted/protected (completed by DNR staff).
- Bearing and/or witness trees discovered during sale preparation must be protected. This can be accomplished by painting a ring completely around the tree at 4-6 feet above ground level with either red paint (corner surrounded by USFS lands). In addition, tying ribbon on these trees helps alert loggers of their presence. Do not mark any trees for harvest if cutting them is likely to result in damage to corner monuments and/or bearing trees. See map for location of known corners.
- Please report the condition of all corners, posts and bearing trees to the local contact.
