About this file
The document is a Timber Sale Prescription from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources - Forest Resources Division for the GNA2 Rough Rider timber sale located in Baraga County. The sale covers 161.4 estimated acres in Township 47N, Range 44W, Sections 1 and 2, with two payment units of hardwood forest to be selectively thinned. The contract work can begin immediately and must be completed by July 31, 2025. The sale involves single tree selection treatment in northern hardwood stands, with specific guidelines for marking trees to cut, favoring certain species like oak, hemlock, white pine, and cedar while maintaining an all-age stand structure with a maximum diameter of 18 inches at breast height.
The timber sale is structured with two payment units: Payment Unit 1 covering 49.4 acres with an initial basal area of 141-170, and Payment Unit 2 covering 112.0 acres with an initial basal area of 111-140. Access to the site requires traveling west from Bergland on M28, then south on Ethelwood Grade, followed by traversing an old railroad grade. The prescription includes detailed marking specifications, such as using blue paint to mark trees to be cut and placing upper marks on two opposite sides of trees 6 feet above the ground. Additional requirements include leaving den and nest trees, retaining specific species, and following guidelines set forth in "The Complete Marker" to selectively thin hardwoods to 70-90 square feet of basal area.
