About this file
This is a Timber Sale Prescription document from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR), Forest Resources Division, for the GNA2 Gold Rush timber sale located in Baraga Management Unit. The project involves selective thinning of hardwood stands across approximately 480.8 acres divided into nine payment units (PUs 1-9) spanning sections 30, 31, 32, and 36 in Township 49N, Range 42W and 43W. The contractor must complete all contract work by June 30, 2025, with work able to commence immediately upon contract execution. The prescription requires marking trees for selective harvest using single-tree selection methods to reduce basal area to 70-90 square feet, with specific guidance to favor oak, hemlock, white pine, and cedar. The contractor is responsible for timber marking, GPS boundary work using MobileMap, timber cruising, and delivering all cruise and GPS data to the DNR. A mandatory pre-work meeting with Baraga DNR staff (contact: Shaun Sullivan at SullivanS4@Michigan.gov or 906-201-0833) must be scheduled and attended prior to commencing work.
The DNR will supply paint materials and establish the work schedule for paint availability, requiring the contractor's schedule to align with DNR staff availability during regular business hours. Deliverables include a list of personnel who marked or cruised each unit, a summary of paint consumption in quarts, and all data uploads from MobileMap to InventoryManager. Key restrictions include limiting markers to no more than two per cruise unit without prior approval, assigning specific geographic areas rather than strips to each marker, and protecting any registered corners, witness trees, or wooden posts discovered during operations. The document includes a detailed timber sale map showing unit boundaries, payment unit acreages, access routes, and cover type classifications. Payment will be based on the estimated 480.8 acres, with specific merchantable timber specifications provided for sawlogs (minimum 10.6" DBH) and pulpwood (minimum 4.6" DBH).

PRESCRIPTION
Selectively thin hardwoods to 70-90 BA. Favor oak, hemlock, white pine, and cedar where present. Oak should be released on three sides to an average BA of 60. Where 30 sq. ft. or more of hemlock occurs, thin to less than 100 BA. Around areas of heavy hemlock, open up the drip edge to encourage hemlock seedling establishment.
1) Mark trees to be cut (blue/teal paint). Favor the best future crop trees in place, regardless of species.
2) Leave den and nest trees.
3) The objective is an all-age stand structure with a max diameter of 18” at DBH in hardwood stands.
4) Retain all hemlock, oak, cedar and pine, unless removal is needed for operability.
5) Where 30 sq. ft. or more of hemlock, thin to less than 100 BA. Around areas of heavy hemlock, open the drip edge to encourage hemlock seedling establishment.
6) Release oak on three sides to a residual of 60 BA. Favor mast producing black cherry.
7) Further guidance will be discussed at the pre-sale meeting.
8) Selectively thin hardwoods to 70-90 sq. ft. of BA. Favor to leave: Oak, hemlock, mast producing black cherry, white pine, red pine, and cedar. Follow the guidelines set forth in “The Complete Marker”.

Put upper marks on two opposite sides of trees 6' above the ground; all marked trees must have stump marks. All cruising will be done by DNR staff once a PU is completed and approved of by DNR staff. Final marking details are to be discussed at the presale meeting. Avoid marking in wet weather conditions, or when tree boles are damp. Sale will be marked with blue nelson paint, supplied by DNR staff. A buffer along the west side of PU 6 and south sides of PU’s 6, 8 and 10 will be marked with teal (nelson paint) extending 50’ in for the length of the units. This is due to adjacent sales marked in blue paint that had not been harvested at the date of the GNA2 Gold Rush sale prep contract.

Additional Information
Pre-work Meeting: The contractor must schedule and attend a prework meeting with the Baraga DNR staff.
When Registered Corners or Witness Trees are discovered:
- Any wooden posts encountered at corners must also be painted/protected (completed by DNR staff)
- Bearing and/or witness trees discovered during the course of sale preparation must be protected. This can be accomplished by painting a ring completely around the tree at 4-6 feet above ground level with either red paint (corner surrounded by state lands). In addition, tying ribbon on these trees helps alert loggers to their presence. Do not mark any trees for harvest if cutting them is likely to result in damage to corner monuments and/or bearing trees. See map for location of known corners.
- Please report the condition of all corners, posts and bearing trees to the local contact.
