About this file
This is a Timber Sale Prescription document from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources - Forest Resources Division for the Couch King Hardwoods sale (11-002-21) in Baraga County, Spurr Township. The prescription covers 278.6 acres across five stands of northern hardwoods, with work to begin immediately and be completed by August 1, 2021. The project involves selective thinning of hardwoods to achieve a basal area between 70-90 square feet per acre, with specific marking and cruising requirements detailed for each stand. Trees to be cut must be marked with orange paint, while boundaries require blue paint for private lines and red paint for state lines and interior payment units.
The prescription includes detailed specifications for timber marking and cruising, with different sampling ratios required for various stands and species. Paint and supplies will be provided by the DNR's Baraga office, though contractors must coordinate schedules with DNR staff availability. Contractors must provide GPS data files in ArcView Shape format, maintain detailed records of workers and paint usage, and upload all cruise and GPS data to InventoryManager. The contractor is required to attend a prework meeting with Baraga DNR staff and may not have more than two markers in one cruise unit without prior approval.
