The Energy Conversion Branch (FCDD-RLA-GC) of the U.S. Army Research Laboratory (ARL) requires one (1) Micromeritics Instrument Corporation Autochem III 2930 Chemisorption Analyzer and accessories to accelerate ongoing research of ethanol reforming.

The Micromeritics AutoChem III 2930 Chemisorption Analyzer is a sophisticated laboratory instrument designed to analyze the surface properties of catalysts and other materials by measuring their chemisorption behavior. Chemisorption refers to the process in which a gas molecule forms a chemical bond with the surface of a solid material, which is a key process in catalytic reactions.

Key Features and Uses:

1. Surface Area and Pore Size Analysis: The AutoChem III 2930 can determine the specific surface area of materials and analyze the size and distribution of pores. This is crucial for understanding the effectiveness of catalysts, as the surface area and pore structure influence the accessibility of active sites for chemical reactions.

2. Metal Dispersion and Active Surface Area: This instrument measures how metal particles are dispersed across the surface of a catalyst. High metal dispersion typically indicates a more effective catalyst. The active surface area, or the area available for chemical reactions, is also quantified, providing insights into the efficiency of the catalyst.

3. Temperature-Programmed Techniques: The AutoChem III 2930 is equipped with temperature-programmed capabilities, including:

· Temperature-Programmed Reduction (TPR): Measures how a material reduces in a hydrogen environment as the temperature increases, which is important for understanding the reducibility of metal oxides.

· Temperature-Programmed Oxidation (TPO): Analyzes how a material oxidizes in an oxygen environment at different temperatures, useful for studying the oxidation properties of catalysts.

· Temperature-Programmed Desorption (TPD): Evaluates how gases desorb from the surface of a material as the temperature increases, providing information on the strength and type of adsorption sites on the surface.

· Temperature-Programmed Reaction (TPRx): Investigates the reactions occurring on the catalyst surface as the temperature is varied.

4. Pulse Chemisorption: This technique allows precise measurement of the amount of gas chemisorbed by the surface of the material, which helps in determining the active metal surface area and the number of active sites on the catalyst.

5. Automated Operation: The instrument offers automated control and data analysis, enhancing the efficiency and reproducibility of experiments.

Applications:

· Catalyst Development: Widely used in research and development of new catalysts, particularly in the chemical, petrochemical, and pharmaceutical industries.

· Material Characterization: Helps in characterizing materials like metals, oxides, zeolites, and other porous solids, providing critical data for material scientists.

· Process Optimization: Assists in optimizing industrial processes by providing detailed information on catalyst performance and behavior.

The AutoChem III 2930 is an essential tool for scientists and engineers involved in catalyst research, materials science, and process development, providing deep insights into the surface chemistry of materials.

Purchasing the AutoChem III 2930 enables a fundamental investigation of reaction kinetics over catalysts during the ethanol reforming process. This deepens our understanding of the reaction mechanisms and provides valuable insights for designing and fabricating more active and selective catalysts for ethanol reforming aimed at hydrogen generation.

Through our market research, we identified a similar chemisorption analyzer at Altamira Instruments. However, this system does not meet the Government’s requirements, as it lacks a built-in vapor generator, which is a crucial component in our designed reaction systems.

Without acquiring this specific analyzer from Micromeritics, our research efforts will face significant delays and increased costs for lab supplies, severely impacting progress in our ethanol reforming projects. This includes the development of catalysts and reactors for more efficient fuel generation, as well as the transition of technology to meet military needs. Failing to procure this analyzer would require setting up an alternative instrument, leading to expenses such as hiring new experts, setup time, and retraining. This process would take over a year to complete and could cost [REDACTED].

Market research was conducted from December 2023 to June 2024 by [REDACTED], a research chemist at ARL with over 20 years of experience. [REDACTED] conducted an extensive market analysis, including internet searches and direct contact with potential vendors. The research concluded that Micromeritics Instruments Corporation is the only company capable of meeting the Government’s minimum requirements for one (1) AutoChem III 2930 Chemisorption Analyzer.

6. FAIR AND REASONABLE PRICE DETERMINATION:

It has been determined that the anticipated cost to the Government will be fair and reasonable and that approval of this recommendation is in the best interest of the government. This justification is accurate and complete to the best of my knowledge and belief.
