1.4. Project Description Requirement:

The RFK Building is undergoing renovation to accommodate a brand-new Department of Justice Museum and Gift Shop. The project is currently in design, and following design completion and construction award, will undergo a 4-month renovation to prepare the space for an exhibit designer. The exhibit design build out will have its own timeline. As the Department of Justice awaits the build out and opening of the DOJ Museum, the Hall of Flags will be repurposed to create a temporary exhibit. The temporary exhibit will highlight artifacts and important documentation relevant to the formation and history of the Department of Justice as we await the opening of the new Department of Justice Museum in 2025.

To prepare the Hall of Flags to become a temporary exhibit, four museum style freestanding glass or acrylic display cases will be purchased and installed in the corridor. Each display case will house artifacts and collections borrowed from other Department of Justice Agencies. The display cabinet provided must provide an airtight seal to protect borrowed collections from damage while in the care of the Department of Defense, Library Staff. The display cases provided must align with the historic aesthetics of the space it will inhabit. Ultra-modern display cases are not appropriate for this space. Once the museum is complete, the temporary display cabinets will become a permanent part of the DOJ Museum and its curated collections.

The Hall of Flags is located within a historic building on the first floor of the RFK Building and is comprised of historic finishes to be maintained. The display locations include a stone lip and historic stone walls that are not to be disturbed. (See Figure 1.1) Due to the existing conditions, the display case provided must be freestanding and incorporate a LED hood within the top of the display cabinet.
