Procedure for entry of Fluid or Urine Testing:
Orders for fluid testing are generally ordered in CPRS by typing “fluid”. The available tests will then be displayed on the screen. Microbiology and Virology test orders are entered by typing in “C&S” or “viral culture”, respectively. Orders for urine testing are generally ordered in CPRS by typing “urine”. The available tests will then be displayed on the screen. Special considerations:
Cerebrospinal fluid-Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) should be indicated on the CPRS order form to caution interpretation of the total protein, electrolytes, cell count, etc. CSF fluids, with the exception of Microbiology and Virology testing are generally considered STAT specimens and as such are to be sent to Butler Memorial hospital for testing, CSF culture specimen are sent to the Pittsburgh VA laboratory for testing. If multiple tests are ordered on a CSF specimen, the tubes should be numbered and submitted as follows:
Tube #1=Chemistry testing which is done by the Butler Memorial Hospital laboratory
Tube #2=Microbiology testing which is done by the Pittsburgh VA laboratory
Tube #3=Cell counts which are done by the Butler Memorial Hospital laboratory
Tube #4=extra tube or sent for any virology testing that may be ordered. Most virology testing is sent to the reference laboratory i.e. LabCorp for testing.
