About this file

This document describes the requirements for a Stereotaxic Drill and Microinjection Robot and Accessories to be used by the Oligodendroglial Interaction Group within the National Institutes of Health Intramural Research Program. The system must include a Stoelting Stereotaxic Drill and Microinjection Robot for mice, Stoelting Mouse Stereotaxic Gas Anesthesia Mask, Stoelting Smart Remote Control, and Stoelting Craniotomy Software. The robot must be capable of automated drilling and microinjections in mice without manually swapping tools. Additional required features include integrated drill and injector, brain atlas integration, autostop drilling, predefined protocols, multisite injections, and precision control of injection depth and position. Delivery is required within 60 days after receipt of order. Electronic, mechanical, and accessory components have warranty periods of one year, one year, and 30 days respectively.

The related federal contract opportunity is solicitation number 75N95023Q00686 for the stereotaxic drill and microinjection robot and accessories on a brand name or equal basis issued by the National Institute on Drug Abuse within the Department of Health and Human Services.

Version 11-30-2016-1 FAR Part 11—Describing Agency Needs

PURCHASE DESCRIPTION

1. Statement of Need and Purpose:

The Stereotaxic Drill and Microinjection Robot and Accessories are required for stereotaxic surgeries to be performed in the Oligodendroglial Interaction Group. The instrument allows for precise mouse brain atlas-guided injections of the mouse brain under gas anesthesia for labeling areas or introducing bioactive substances to probe brain function.

2. Background Information and Objective:

The overarching objective of the Oligodendroglial Interactions Group within the NIH IRP is to advance our understanding of the reciprocal interactions between oligodendroglia and neurons. The research is designed to clarify how patterns of myelin emerge during development, explore the extent to which oligodendroglia exhibit coordinated responses to neuronal activity and discover how changes in the myelin landscape contribute to experience-dependent neuroplasticity. The Drill and Microinjection Robot is an essential piece of equipment to conduct this research as it allows researchers to perform specific injections of bioactive substances to target specific cell types including oligodendrocytes and neurons.

3. Generic Name of Product:

Stereotaxic frame

4. Purchase Description:

Brand name or equal to:

1. Stoelting Stereotaxic Drill and Microinjection Robot, Animal: Mouse (3) Manufacturer's name: Neurostar (3) Model, type, catalog, and/or part number(s): Vendor Catalog #51705 (Stoelting),

2. Stoelting Mouse Stereotaxic Gas Anesthesia Mask (3) Manufacturer's name: Stoelting (3) Model, type, catalog, and/or part number(s): Vendor Catalog #51509M (Stoelting),

3. Stoelting Smart Remote Control (3) Manufacturer's name: Stoelting (3) Model, type, catalog, and/or part number(s):

Vendor Catalog #58632 (Stoelting),

4. Stoelting Craniotomy Software for Robotic System (3) Manufacturer's name: Neurostar (3) Model, type, catalog, and/or part number(s): Vendor Catalog #58637 (Stoelting)

5. Salient characteristics The Stereotaxic Drill & Microinjection Robot must have Mouse Stereotaxic Gas Anesthesia Mask, Smart Remote Control, and Craniotomy Software. Robotic System must be capable of automated drilling of the mouse skull, followed by ultraprecise injection of the brain that does not require the researcher to manually swap out drill and injection tools between operations. After loading the syringe, user shall be able to perform injections in subsequent animals without recalibration. The system must have brain atlas integration, intuitive computer control of the stereotaxic frame, and alignment correction to ensure that all the procedures are precise and efficient. The system also must include an Autostop Drilling functionality which detects by electrical measurements when the skull is penetrated and stops all movements immediately (both rotation and advancement of the drill bit stop). This is important since it will allow automatic drilling through the mouse skull without damaging the underlying brain tissue. The following additional specific features needed for the system to meet the Government’s objectives include: Integrated Drill and Injection Robot for Mouse Stereotaxic Frame, Gas anesthesia mask for adult mouse, Smart remote control device to manually adjust the position of the Drill or Injector, Real-Time Mouse Brain Atlas Integration of Drill or Injector Position, Autostop Drilling, must have automatical drill and injection devices and there shall be no need to manually swap out drill and injection devices (precise positioning of the drill and injector tip must be automated after initial equilibration), Capacity to Define/Store Protocols, Amenable for Multisite Microinjections in the same animal, Ideal for Optogenetics applications, have Precise Control over depth of injections into the mouse brain, Automated windowing of the skull using the drill, Skull contour drilling and edge smoothing, and Automated skull thinning using the drill.
