About this file
The document is a process description for Battalion Chief testing, associated with a fire department's civil service commission. The process outlines a comprehensive examination and selection procedure for promoting fire captains to the Battalion Chief position. The written examination is valued at 100 percent and consists of both open and closed book multiple-choice questions based on position duties. Candidates scoring 75 or higher will receive service credit points, with up to 10 additional points for full years of service in the Bureau of Fire. Candidates must have served at least two years as a Fire Captain to be eligible for promotion, and the final eligibility list will be ranked by examination score with ties broken by lottery.
The document specifies additional requirements including a mandatory medical examination prior to appointment. The selection process emphasizes a structured, merit-based approach to promotional advancement, with clear criteria for scoring, service credit, and eligibility. Candidates are guaranteed a review period for their examination papers, and the Civil Service Commission will certify eligible candidates based on the established evaluation framework. The medical requirement ensures that selected candidates meet physical fitness standards necessary for the Battalion Chief role.
