Kay Au
Technical Level II
Kay Au is a chemical engineer with experience in process engineering and process and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs).
Visual Assessment
Project Engineer, San Diego Integrated Master Plan, San Diego Public Utilities
Department, San Diego, California. The San Diego Integrated Master Plan project requires visual assessment of over 180 facilities and 10,000+ assets owned by San Diego
Public Utilities Department (SDPUD). Potable water distribution and treatment facilities, wastewater collection and treatment facilities, raw water pump stations, and recycled water facilities are among the facilities in which visual assessment was conducted. The visual assessment is an integral part of the SDPUD Integrated Master Plan (IMP) as it takes up a significant portion of the IMP. Moreover, assessments of the IMP help update the
SDPUD’s current asset management program and allow SDPUD to prioritize future capital improvement projects. Au has conducted visual field assessments of pump stations and wastewater facilities, identifying assets while assessing their conditions.
Prior to CDM Smith
University of California, Los Angeles
Student Engineer, Los Angeles County Sanitation District (LACSD), Compton, California. Kay was responsible for the integration of digital filing, sorting and reviewing over 1,000 manholes and pipes in surrounding counties utilizing ArcGIS and Excel.
Working on the flow monitoring project, she inspected manholes and took note of their conditions for the purpose of rehabilitation.
Ethylene Cracking Section Lead, Electrified Ethylene Plant (Capstone), UCLA, Los
Angeles, California. For her capstone project, Au and her team were tasked with designing an electrified ethylene plant, with each person assigned to a single piece of equipment. Au’s equipment was the ethylene cracking furnace, where she had to design and optimize its performance while keeping costs low. To do this, Au ran multiple case studies to maximize the amount of product is made at the lowest duty possible, comparing multiple options down to the dollar. She calculated capital and operational expenses of all equipment involved with the cracking furnace, including pumps, valves, and flash drums.
Because an electrified cracking furnace is not yet commercial, Au was required to conduct extra research on firing methods and therefore the inner coils and their arrangement. She was also responsible for creating a simulation of the cracking furnace, as well as a master process flow diagram (PFD) of all equipment involved in her section (oil quench, water quench, etc.).
Lead Undergraduate Researcher, UCLA Nanomaterials and Membrane Technology
Research (NanoMeTeR) Lab, UCLA, Los Angeles, California. Ms. Au was involved in research concerning mostly reverse osmosis membranes as well as ultrafiltration membranes for the purpose of desalination. She is familiar with high pressure membrane testing with the crossflow system, as well as a stir cell, up to 3000 psi. She also conducted lab scale experiments, synthesizing thin-film composite (TFC) membranes. She was

Kay Au responsible for the training of new undergraduate lab students to use high pressure systems and PhD students to synthesize TFC membranes. The study aimed to find the role transmembrane pressure and flux in membrane compaction and therefore the membrane’s performance. In sum, her research and its implications were that higher transmembrane pressure induced greater compaction, therefore structural deformity, but also greater salt rejection.
Product Development Engineer Intern, Henkel, Irvine, California. Ms. Au assisted the product development team, where she made and tested batches of conductive die-attach paste to measure the bleed, bond lines, and fillet on various semiconductor substrates to assess favorability. At the manufacturing plant, she assisted in the design and improvement of an ultrasonic cavitation process, where she was able to successfully break up agglomerates of die attach paste intermediates, decreasing the traditional time necessary to do so. Additionally, Au, along with a lab mentor, decreased the viscosity to a target centipoise value for a non-conductive encapsulating underfill. She assisted in meeting clients’ needs for die attach film by testing change in mass using a thermogravimetric analyzer.
Chemicals/Upstairs Team Member, Chem-E-Car, American Institute of Chemical
Engineers (AIChE), UCLA, Los Angeles, California. Chem-E-Car is a competition hosted by AIChE that engages aspiring engineers to build a shoebox-sized car powered by a chemical energy source. Regional competitions first occur, with the winners proceeding to the annual student conference. As a member of the upstairs/chemical team, Ms. Au was responsible for functionalizing a previous year’s aluminum air battery to generate enough current and voltage to run our 3D-printed car. She instead redesigned the final battery configuration so that it could power our car, generating 9 volts and 1 amp. Ms. Au was also responsible for preparing and finalizing the chemicals and concentrations for day of competitions, pre-building all battery cells and executing test runs. An Engineering Design
Process (EDP) was formulated, and Au represented her upstairs team at regionals and student conference.

Natalie Miller
Natalie Miller joined the CDM Smith team in 2024. She completed her bachelor’s degree in environmental engineering at Arizona State University (ASU) and her attendance at
Barrett, the Honors College not only required her to elevate her academics but also to create and defend a thesis. In addition to her education, Ms. Miller completed two local internships, both relating to water treatment process design and maintenance. Through her academics and work experience, Ms. Miller developed a comprehensive understanding of water treatment processes, soil and groundwater remediation technologies, disinfection practices, and the analysis of chemical fate and transport.
Stormwater Compliance Inspector, City of Phoenix Aviation
Department, Stormwater Compliance Program, Phoenix, Arizona
Ms. Miller is a stormwater compliance inspector for the Stormwater Pollution Prevention
Program (SWPPP) for the three Phoenix airports: Sky Harbor International, Phoenix-Deer
Valley, and Phoenix-Goodyear. This program requires that Ms. Miller perform quarterly inspections for approximately five facilities during runoff events. The inspections include a walk-through of the facilities in which Ms. Miller ensures that the members are utilizing the appropriate control measures to comply with the SWPPP. In addition to the quarterly inspections, Ms. Miller is also responsible for being on-call for potential spills at any of the aforementioned airports. If a spill occurs, Ms. Miller oversees the cleanup of the contaminated areas and all affected stormwater drains.
Field Engineer, Various Superfund Site Remediation Efforts, Arizona
Department of Environmental Quality, Arizona
Ms. Miller currently assists with field work for two Superfund Sites under the ADEQ. This work includes groundwater sampling at numerous ADEQ monitoring wells for the two different groundwater plumes. From these field endeavors, Ms. Miller has gained experience sampling groundwater for volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and PFAS as well as experience in well network monitoring. The sampling processes required her to maintain accurate record keeping, provide thorough notetaking, and follow appropriate safety precautions. While Ms. Miller was assisting a geologist for most of the field work, she did have the opportunity to independently oversee subcontractors conducting soil vapor sampling. This was a great opportunity for Ms. Miller to demonstrate what she had learned from previous sampling excursions in addition to her effective leadership skills.
