Please refer to CSU Single-Use Plastics Policy for additional information.
We advocate for a sustainable menu and are dedicated to collaborating with contracted vendors in the USU to provide compostable options for our customers. Vendors must compost and/or recycle packaging and waste in their back-of-house operations.
ASI requires that vendors adhere to Assembly Bill 1219, which mandates organizations donate surplus food whenever feasible. Surplus food should be directed to the Laurén Chalmers ’83 Beach Pantry to help support our student community. Food service tenants shall comply with City of Long Beach ordinances as required.
Food service operations should be optimized to significantly reduce waste, enhance sustainability, and positively impact the community. ASI will collaborate with vendors to understand campus requirements for food waste management, aligning efforts with the campus-wide initiative to reduce CSULB's carbon footprint.

2.0 Background
2.1 The University
The campus is in Long Beach, California. Just three miles from the ocean and stretching across 323 beautifully landscaped acres with 84 buildings, CSULB, one the CSU system’s largest campuses, is a comprehensive, urban university in the heart of an international city and thriving coastal community. Over 40,000 (fall 2024) of the best and brightest students from across the state and nation are making CSULB their “University of Choice” – selecting CSULB for it’s comfortable, secure and supportive environment that facilitates academic excellence, student success and campus life. At present, the University residence halls are home to approximately 3,200 students (just 8% of CSULB’s overall student population). Housing on-campus will increase by an additional 900 beds before 2030. Furthermore, 5,600 faculty and staff continue to make CSULB the third largest employer in the City of Long Beach. For additional information on CSULB visit:
https://web.csulb.edu/divisions/urd/beachfacts/.
2.2 Associated Students, Incorporated
ASI is a non-profit corporation, operating as an auxiliary organization of the CSU system. ASI is an integral part of the campus and complies with applicable requirements of the Board of Trustees of the California State University and campus President. A central component under the ASI corporate structure is the USU.
ASI has an Investment Policy regarding social responsibility when making investment decisions and expects its business partners to do the same. It is crucial that business partners pay appropriate attention to relevant corporate governance, social, ethical and environmental considerations in the selection, retention and placement of all investments.
2.3 University Student Union
Widely regarded as ASI’s greatest contribution to campus life, the USU is funded by the mandatory Student Union fee and income from USU operations. The facility provides food service, recreational amenities and student organization offices. In addition, the “Union” provides lounge space and study areas, retail services and conference/meeting rooms. The USU, spanning 128,300 gross sq. feet, is the largest and most frequented facility managed by the ASI. It welcomes thousands of students, faculty and staff daily. With the Future U Renovation/Expansion Project commencing in August 2025, the Union will expand by an additional 61,000 gross sq. feet, reaching a total of 189,300 gross sq. feet upon its reopening in August 2028.
The USU is considered the heart and soul of the campus. Used by thousands of students, staff, faculty, alumni and visitors daily, it has become the welcoming living room for CSULB. Operated by ASI, and overseen by a Board of Trustees, the mission for the union is to be an inclusive gathering place which provides innovative programs, essential services and co-curricular experiences that enrich student development while contributing toward their retention, enhancing their educational experience and promoting student advocacy. ASI’s vision for the USU has always been "best at what students want," and the USU Board of Trustees is held accountable to this mission each year. The Board includes student leaders, staff, faculty and alumni representatives, meeting monthly throughout the academic year to discuss the operations of the building.
The USU is located at the geographic center of campus, set into a hill along Friendship Walk, a main pedestrian thoroughfare. It is three stories and serves as the only accessible path of travel via an internal elevator to get pedestrians from “lower” to “upper” campus.
The Future U Project began with a year-long campaign during the 2022-2023 academic year to connect, engage and listen to what students, faculty and staff need in a renovation and expansion of the USU. The project was approved in April 2023. Through the 2023-24 academic year, students, staff and administrators worked with Canon Design on a feasibility report, which involved investigating the building and land to ensure the project could stay within budget and accommodate the elements identified by campus stakeholders. That report was completed in April 2024, and we have selected Penta | Gensler as the architect, design, and construction team for the remainder of the project.
With the upcoming building expansion and renovation, the USU will offer additional space for new food service and retail vendors. Therefore, ASI invites proposals from vendors interested in occupying and operating establishments that cater to the unique needs of our students.
