About this file
This Statement of Work (SOW) details NASA's requirements for modifying an existing cryostat to enable testing of two key technologies: large-format microcalorimeter arrays using time-division multiplexing and a continuous adiabatic demagnetization refrigerator (CADR). The modification will allow for TRL-6 level demonstration and potential cost reduction for flight mission implementation.
The SOW specifies four key deliverables: a modified Vacuum Jacket with BF-200 central opening and 8-inch vacuum tail extension, a modified 40 Kelvin radiation shield with 7.5-inch length and 8-inch diameter bore opening, a 4 Kelvin tail extension of 10 inches, and modified harness thermal clamps to accommodate nine 1.5-inch wide harness looms. The work will be performed at the vendor's site over a 5-month period after receipt of order (ARO), with NASA providing the cryostat to be modified. The requirements reference specific Danaher Cryo proprietary part numbers, indicating this may relate to the sole-source contract to Danaher Cryogenics Ltd mentioned in the associated pre-solicitation notice.

STATEMENT OF WORK
Cryostat Upgrade December 18th, 2024
PR: _____________________
Background
A cryostat is needed to perform an integrated test of two key technologies that NASA has been developing for the past twenty years. These are the detection chain for reading out large‐format microcalorimeter arrays using time‐division multiplexing, and the continuous adiabatic demagnetization refrigerator (CADR). The integrated test will enable a TRL‐6 level demonstration and potentially allow the reduction of models and cost needed to implement these technologies for a flight mission. Such a cryostat would typically cost hundreds of thousands of dollars to procure and would take more than a year to obtain. However there already exists a cryostat that has the potential to be adapted to be suitable for the demonstration. This is the cryostat that was used for the testing of the XRISM detection chain and adiabatic demagnetization refrigerator. We are requesting a modification of this cryostat to enable it to accommodate the planned demonstration.
Objectives and Scope The Government expects the delivery of 4 deliverables to enable the modification of the NASA-provided cryostat that meet the requirements described below. These are:
1. Vacuum Jacket.
2. 40 K Radiation Shield
3. 4 K Radiation Shield
4. Harness Thermal Clamps
Requirements:
The modifications to the cryostat will enable the design to look as shown in Figure 1. Part numbers such as Part P17196-406 refer to Danaher Cryo proprietary part numbers.
Figure 1 Upgraded Cryostat Design
1. Modify the Vacuum Jacket to include:
a. A modification to the Vacuum Dome, Part P17196-406, to change the central opening to BF-200.
b. A new vacuum tail extension based upon Part P17196-404, except that the total length is 8 inches. No captive screws and no handles.
2. Modify the 40 Kelvin radiation shield to include:
a. Extend the 40-Kelvin radiation shell based upon Part P17196-401, except that the length is 7.5 inches. No captive screws.
b. Modify the 40 Kelvin dome opening in Part P17196-401 with a larger
8.000 inch diameter clear bore opening and a #4 (4-40) bolt pattern on an 8.500” diameter.
3. Provide a 4 Kelvin tail extension based upon P17196-401 except that the total length in 10 inches. No captive screws.
4. Modify three of part P17196-032 with harness clamps P04102-040 to accept three
1.5 inch wide looms to allow for a total of 9 harness looms, each 1.5 inches wide, to pass through 40-Kelvin Plate.
